I've tried Vuescan, Epson Scan and SilverFast, and from my experiences, Vuescan and Epson Scan are the best for this scanner.
Epson scan works best if you let it go on auto and don't need to finely control the colors of the image. It's best for batch scanning as the auto function seems to work better than Vuescan. Vuescan is incredibly powerful in manual mode and allows for extremely fine tuning of the image, however, it's terrible for batch scanning and the auto features tend to always get shitty colors.
Just remember that the image is not going to be as sharp as a dedicated scanner and you should really invest in one if you're looking for the best results. Pic is a 100% crop of a Kodak Gold 200 pic from a couple years back that I scanned with my equipment. Left is my v550 and right is my Nikon LS2000.
