They kept the same mount and autofocus protocol from minolta, you can use minolta lenses on the sony bodys, and early sony lenses on older minolta bodies.
They got lots of things from minolta, including sensor shifting for stabilisation, autofocus technology, etc etc. . There's no way sony with no prior experience could come up with a competent, fully fledged dSLR in mid 2000's if it weren't for Minolta.
At least something came out of the acquisition, and new, improved products were released. Most acquisitions end up in dead products shortly afterwards.
