DIL - decent iso limit
* - nikon have sony sensors

5dm2 - 200 bucks, DIL 6400, nice DR
6d - 400 bucks, DIL 12800
a7 - 400 bucks MILC, DIL ~5K, sony signature DR
5dm3 - 450 bucks DIL 12800 really decent DR
d600 - 300 bucks DIL 12800 sony signature DR* also have oil problems, google prior to buy
d610 - 350 bucks DIL 12800 sony signature DR*
d750 - 600 bucks DIL 12800 basically d600/610 with really good af
a7m2 - 550 bucks a7m1 with better af design and IBIS DIL same

nikon d700 - can find under 150 bucks DIL6400
canon 5d - same 3200 iso limit but this is REALLY DECENT full-frame 3200 iso

fix what wrong

i'm weak at high res and square cameras maybe will do later but i'm not superspez here

also i don't like square cameras

i'm shooting night street photography so i only use low res high iso cameras

high res too weak at iso but decent choice for sure i totally suppport it

and square cameras are too big to use at night street i don't want to be killed, i'm not in Tokyo it's not safest place here

I already have the D800 and i bought for 500$, DIL is pretty much at 6400 and you can always downscale the photo if you want and get cleaner image.

As for square cameras, they're really nice for shooting in portrait orientation and usually they're very well built that you can use it as a weapon.

What did you settle higher? "nice DR" or "really decent DR"?
For both noise floor and dynamic range
6D > 5D2 > 5D3

High iso is a tad worse on the 5D2 and the RAW of the 5D2 can't be pushed well, as the sensor pattern becomes apparent rather early.
In general, for Canon sensors, the more modern, the fewer errors extreme processing errors reveal. The images of the 5D4 and R can really be processed very comfortably.

I forgot, raw file editability is actually also the main feature I appreciate about Sony sensors/Sonikon bodies. I don't know when that became good on Sonikon bodies, though. And unfortunately there is no metric for it and reviewers don't discuss it.

I guess DR is not the major indication of easy processability. With an identical shot at ISO 1250 with the 6D and 5D4, the 5D4's file is much easier to edit. According to photonstophotos the DR should not differ much from 1600 onwards.

Are you a crop shooter? Any FF body from the past 5-6 years can do 8x10 at ISO 12,800 with decent quality. ISO 3200 is 16x24 or 20x30 territory depending on the camera.

High res FF has competitive ISO when viewed at the same size. The idea that the ISO is worse comes from comparing at 1:1 where the higher resolution image is magnified more.

D800/800E are a steal right now. IMHO these were the first 35mm DSLRs to give MF digital a run for its money. 5Ds/sR gray market aren't dirt cheap...they're $1,200 and up...but they are phenomenal bodies with amazing IQ. They can also hold their own against digital MF.

It's a good time to go FF with all the mirrorless hype.

with bigger sensor cell you get much bigger amount of light that cell receive per unit of time

on less cell size you would have not same amount of light for same physical square size cause cell isn't consist only of chemical reacting on light but also fron borders of cell. more cell means more borders on same sensor tech.

for differrent generations of sensors it of course depends, but still, same low res sensor from one generation with high res sensor would be able to get bigger amount of light per unit of time

Thoughts on Nikon Df? I want it so bad but at $1100 used? It's still overpriced especially when I can get a D750 for like $700 or so

This hasn't mattered since gapless microlenses were introduced just over a decade ago. A sensor of a given size is collecting the same photons whether it's 12mp or 61mp.

Circuitry and QE can vary from sensor design to sensor design even with the same exact MP count, so you will see some differences in noise patterns. But FF cameras shipped over the last decade all show <1ev of difference. Probably the most noticeable shift occurred within a single model line at the same MP from the A72 to the A73. And that's not because the A73 is above par, but because the A72 for some reason had fallen below.

All cameras get softer/less detailed as you push the ISO. But high rez FF starts from a higher resolution to begin with, so even at the highest ISOs it remains fairly sharp and detailed. I honestly would rather work with high ISO RAWs from a D800/850 or 5Ds/sR, or Sony's A7R's, than any other cameras.

For movies it's a bit different because of the way the sensor is mapped to 4k. The A7S bodies are low light champs in 4k, as are 24mp sensors which are over sampled to 4k (as opposed to being binned or line skipped).

D600 is shit. Oil on sensor. Also the AF sensor is the fucking same shit as the D7000. The coverage on the viewfinder is poor.

nikon fixing oil problem for free till spring 2020 and anyway fixing oil problem cheap and fast even after that date also you can buy already fixed and only some part of all d600 was affected by oil problem you can just check serial number prior to buy there is page on nikon site to check whether your camera affected or not

First of all, it’s not oil. They painted the shitter used dog shit paint and the paint will start to chip and fall on to your image sensor.

Also literally Monday is the last day you can send your D600 in for the free servicing. Says it on the website. January 10th.

I've had a D600 for years and, as long as you clean the sensor occasionally (which you should anyway) its literally not an issue. Even when i get the occasional spot, photoshop shifts it in one click. Its a great camera for the second hand price.
