I'm looking for a good secondary camera that I can carry around much easier than my DSLR. I've been looking around at compact cameras and I'd really like the Ricoh GR III, but I'm not ready to spend the premium for a camera that I'm not sure about. Does anyone have any thoughts on the GR II? Is it comparable to the GR III, and is it worth the price on the secondary market?

These are the biggest fucking meme. Image quality is ass and dust on the sensor ruins them and they ALL get it. Avoid.

Try a cheap film point and shoot or look at old Sony RX100's. They are much smaller and image quality is good without the defects.

What you want is the Ricoh Gr Digital (2006) the very first digital Ricoh Gr ever made. You can find one for maybe $100 on eBay. It will fit in your pocket and dust isn't much of an issue. I get some lag rarely when I change the iso (but sticking to P mode and using the spot meter setting to get the right exposure is the easiest way to shoot this camera). It's extremely portable and will fit in any pocket. Startup time is pretty snappy and it has a very primitive snap focus that allows you to press the shutter all the way down in a single motion and will yield a in focus image (if your SS is too low and you're handholding then this will effect it much more) about 9/10 times. (I think it has something to do with the tiny sensor and wide lens). Of course if you like it then you could consider upgrading to the apsc sized versions, but I think you'll find the gr digital to be very capable.

Get a II. The III is overpriced and the II is still a great camera. The image quality is great and the form factor is perfect for a second camera. I use mine a lot, the fact that it's not that expensive also helps with that, you don't have to worry about scratches or wear, just throw it in a bag or pocket and take it with you everywhere you go.

Or the older Sony Nex cameras. They're still good and more compact than the newer Alpha ones. Sony Nex 5n and pancake lens is tiny. And cheap as hell, the 5n is what I started with. I paid £75 for body and kit lens used on ebay.

How hard is dust removal? I’ve heard the dust also gets in the lens? If I have nothing against thoroughly cleaning sensor every so often is it a good camera to pick?

Maybe you would have a point if the a6000 was like half the price of a gr ii, but it isn't, even without a lens its more expensive than a gr ii, and you would need a good lens to get IQ comparable to the gr ii, so at that point its twice the price for a non pocketable camera, which isn't what he asked for.

Yeah, but crap. Mirrorless are lacking good pancake lenses. There's panasonic 20mm f1.7, and leica tl 18mm f2.8, and really nothing else. Sure olympuse primes are almost pancake, but they extend a little too much to really be pancake.

The III doesn't have significant enough upgrades to justify the price.

You don't really need IBIS for wider angles, and you don't really need the 24MP since the GRII has no AA filter and the lens is quite sharp already.

If you're worried about dust, just remove it in post.

every fixed lens camera will get dust eventually if you use it every day and store it in your pocket or leave it in a dusty place, just use a case/bag for it.
even leica q's get dust on the sensor.
not sure about ricoh gr iii and if the dust removal shake thing is effective.
worst case its a few clicks in your editor/raw developer to heal dust spots.

I cleaned mine last year, took me two tries to get all the dust off, but it wasn't very difficult. There's a good manual online and the risk of ruining the camera is low.

GR III has ibis, body stabilizaton. Manufacturers with it have figure that it helps mitigate dust buildup on sensor if sensor just shakes itself when you turn it on. On mirrorless/dslr It's something, but as time progresses you still end up with some smudges on sensor, and it needs cleaning. GR III is new design, should have better sealing in the first place.

Most people have had gr ii's for years without getting dust, its mainly just a factor of fixed lens cameras inevitably getting dust on the sensor if they are used/stored in dusty/linty areas constantly, so put it in a case or bag before putting it in your pocket if you are concerned about dust.
gr iii has the dust shake thing but I don't think it has been out long enough for any conclusions on whether it is effective or not, although one of the major ingress points for dust on the previous gr's were the pop up flash which is missing on the gr iii so one would assume its less likely to get dust on the sensor.

I have both the GR2 and GR3 and from what I see most people that want the GR2 over the GR3 want it because either of the built in Flash, the different in camera raw development (most are obsessed with the GR2 'positive film' emulation) or the two buttons they removed on the GR3.

I don't care about the flash that I have only used once on the GR2 and I haven't missed the missing 2 buttons so far.
I personally like the GR3 more just because it has USB-C which makes it so much more comfortable to use. I don't have to carry around multiple batteries or even a battery charger. When I travel I just charge it with my battery pack in a matter of minutes (USB-C PD!) that I have around for my phone anyways.
