Why does a mirrorless camera need a mechanical shutter?
What's the point since electronic shutter can have any speed and the sensor is always on and capturing anyway?

Because right now cameras can not read out the whole sensor at once. It is read out per pixel, which can take quite a bit. As a result you will get rolling shutter. Reading out the whole sensor at once is called global shutter and does not exist yet. As soon as it’s possible a mechanical shutter will no longer be needed.

But those are the second strongest effect on the image I can choose as a photographer, right behind framing. Why would you want to get rid of aperture in a future where ISO isn't a limitation any longer?

Because turning a dial on my lens from f11 to f2 is way faster than having to selectively blur all the parts of the image other than my subject and their immediate surroundings.

If ISO ever becomes a non-issue (and I wouldn't bet too highly on that), then I'd just leave my aperture at f16 until I want DoF, then I just open it up until I get the DoF I want.

There are already lenses that do it. It's like an infinite focus stack. Can't for the life of me remember what it's called but it's already a thing.

Will focus stack even be required if they quadrupel the dynamic range of a camera? If ISO becomes a non-issue for most practical purposes, why wouldn't you just shoot really closed down at stupidly high shutter speeds huge ass DoF with zero motion blur?

In the future, noise won't be an issue, focus won't be an issue.
You'll just take a picture, the camera stores the info about the distance of each point in it (which it can do with hundreds of auto focus points) and you can choose focus and DOP in post.

You may not like it, but this is what it's gonna be like.

That sounds lovely, but when you say future, do you mean the average enthusiast can get a lens/body combo that does this for $1200 by 2030?

You sure? You're effectively having to auto-focus at all the various distances throughout the shot to stack, correct? That assumes your AF motor in your lens is just as fast as your electronic shutter. I'm also assuming here that AF hunting is gone and it's just a smooth min-focus distance out to infinity every shot.

Light field cameras. There's no free lunch though - there are a lot of downsides to light field optics, like a much smaller effective aperture compared to your real aperture (meaning much worse signal to noise ratio, especially in low light).

Also called plenoptic cams. Tech is slowly creeping into regular photography. Canon has a lighter version already. And there's Panasonics post focus. Which is basically just focus bracketing that allows you to select right shot.

clicks will be replaced by haptic feedback motors. in 20 years your camera will be an almost entirely solid state device with everything from dials to shutter mechanism being given physical presence by fancy motors like the ones apple put in iphone when home button got removed. sounds shitty and probably will be, but dials will become future-boomer shit

Correct. Cameras will be able to do that in the time it now takes to focus normally, store all the info at all the distances, and let you figure it out in post.
