Any trail runners have recommendations for camera straps or holsters for a mirrorless with smallish lens? I am hearing good things online about Peak Performance.

Seems fine to me. Pretty much anything 12MP and up does okay if you can compose well.

A harness like that might be too much for me.

I'm thinking of just buying something like this.
Most images show the camera with the lens pointing downwards, but I want to try and point the camera reverse so the lens rests on my shoulder.
Not sure if that's possible though, does anyone know?

lens down pulls the strap slightly and the camera won't flip. if you mount it the otherway the camera and lens will flip around from your shoulder cause theres not much stopping it at the other end

Do you have experience with that device in the picture?

From what I can tell the entire thing holds an arca plate in place with a lock, and the camera shouldn't turn.

Some anons, in another thread, had a discussion on whether the Pentax Q7 could do bokeh with a nifty fifty lens. The claim was that the 1/1.7" sensor was too small (smaller than MFT.) Well, it can do it very well, close-up and at proper portraiture distances, but since it is essentially increasing the magnification due to its resolution vs crop factor the CA gets terrible. This is a before-after pic, removing as much CA as possible. So, you'd need a lens with good bokeh plus little to no CA if you want good photos without tinkering around.

Get a backpack for everything then a strap only for the camera and lens you are using. Then use an extra padding slip-on for the shoulder/neck strap. Those are usually very cheap and with with your current strap.

I just ordered some of this stuff myself just to try them out.
One of them is for the belt, which in theory is the best position to load weight onto when not in use since upper body won't be tired.

Also, avoid amazon for small shit like this, they are utterly overpriced compared to ebay.

Check put Black Rapid’s stuff. Their mounts screw into the tripod socket which works well for smaller body/lens combos. Carrying some big, telephoto monstrosity? Thread the strap clip into the tripod foot. Good shit.

I got my shoulder strap from emora. I don't know how to describe it, but the bottom tripod mount swivels in such a way that it does not unscrew itself from the camera. Plus there are no external metal parts that rub against the camera, and the skinny shoulder strap looks miles better while still being comfortable.

I bought an XF10 for the pocketability with good apsc lowlight IQ and the price. Planned to use snapshot mode most of the time expecting the AF to be useless. But after tweaking the settings to make the AF more reliable, shooting at subjects with enough contrast even at 2 lux as tested, firmware update, I have no problem using it for normal, slow paced shooting. Just don't expect Sony AF speed as basis. For fast paced shooting, I just use snapshot mode. Flash, touchscreen, joystick are a plus. I can't speak for the other 2 cameras, they also should have their pros and cons.

Massive differences in comfort and accessibility when hauling large zooms all day. They're also easier to sling brace, which I find nearly impossible with a neck strap worn cross body.

I keep mulling it over, and it really does seem like the XF10 is what I want. The others may have more features/controls, but they’re also way older (not that concerned over less resolution—it’s more the processor/other advances that help image quality).

DESU the XF10 looks plenty customizable for me, and the front ring looks pretty cool. I’d also prefer something without a tilting screen, so it fits the bill there too.

The front ring is also customizable, aside from the other two fn buttons.
I mainly use it for MF only or AF + MF options, like DMF of Sony. While in AF mode, pressing the shutter button halfway then rotating the front ring will activate the MF with focus peaking (if set) and distance scale on the screen. Also, it can be used as digital teleconverter. 35, 50mm at jpg mode auto upscaled to 24 mp, if needed.
I was aiming for an aspc pocketable low light option, comparable to the gr iii 's sensor and the XF10 is less than half the price, plus there's a built in flash which I use occasionally so I didn't hesitate to get one.

For cheapest, about any 2nd hand dslr or mirrorless kit of any brand from last decade will do the job.

Some of that CA enhancement is also due to how the Q-series process the images. They are higher saturation in typical CA colors(pic). Even with RAW shooting it still uses a noise reduction filter, depending on how high the ISO is set. On the Q7 you need to set the noise reduction(NR) to low or auto then never use any ISO higher than 400 since the NR starts kicking in at ISO800. Also, the diffraction limit is pretty harsh at around f/3.5. So, any f-stop tighter than that will start to give you noticeable diffraction. This is because the pixels are wee tiny.

I need a digital shooter for work. Personally, would love a compact with zoom that is versatile and I can keep in a pocket or small compartments, but if the best shots are going to be on primes/a variety of lenses, I will capitulate and buy an interchangeable lens option.

Everyone seems to be on Sony. Is that where I should go, and which models should I look at? I've heard a6 line has some good value these days.

The Peak Design plates and mounts are quite good, but unless your camera is small you will also want the “pro pad” or whatever they call their reinforcing plate, especially if you want to mount on a backpack strap and/or with the lens pointing in.

Likely Portraits/headshots. Maybe product shots, I'm expecting some scenery/architecture as well. I used a Canonet QL17 for about 10 rolls. Kinda liked it, kinda didn’t. Size and handling were on point, focus was sometimes a bit hard to get.

Being used to a dslr it’s a quite different approach. Currently rocking a D700 with a few lenses and a speedlight and a F80. So whenever I feel like shooting film I just switch bodies. Kinda neat, but i still want the damn Leica. Help me :(

The Leica's rangefinder is unparalleled, so focusing with it will be a little bit easier than with a Canonet. But it's still a rangefinder, and there's a reason they were superseded by SLR's in all but a niche market. It's not going to be fundamentally easier than what you've experienced, that's one of the reasons why people usually use wide angle lenses on a Leica and use zone focusing a lot.

I'm considering getting a flash for my Nikon FM2n. What should I look out for when getting one?
I might get a more advanced Nikon camera later-on so ideally I'd prefer one I can both use both on the FM2 with on-flash metering and with TTL flash metering on an F100 or D700 for instance.

One suggestion I found online was a Nikon SB-28. There's one for sale close-by for about $43. Is that a good price? What about the newer ones like an SB-600 for instance? What do those add to the table?

Should I look mainly for Nikon flashes or will other manufacturer's flashes also fully work with Nikon cameras?

It depends what you want exactly from autofocus. DSLR is still best for close objects in the darkness because sensor can see IR illumination. Anything that has PDAF can autofocus very quickly in good light. No amount of object recognition will make contact detect quite as good. Also, lens has to have a linear or just a fast motor to actually move the focus even if sensor knows where it has to go.

I don't know if those exist anon. The moment a flash had ttl, it would drop the auto-thyristor sensor because it was redundant.
Maybe they exist, I have no idea.

Thing is though, why not get a cheap thyristor flash for now (like Vivitar 283 for $15-20, or Vivitar 285 for ~$30), and later on, if you're not satisfied with the flash's meter and need ttl, you can look at ttl models (new Yongnuos are the best value for money for that).

Manual flash from any manufacturer works on any camera.
Autothyristor flash from any manufacturer works on any camera.
TTL flash is locked per camera, i.e. a manufacturer can offer different models, each one capable of TTL for a specific camera. If a specific flash does TTL on camera brand, it doesn't do TTL on any other camera brand.

My big thing holding me back from teh 14-24 is that I can't use standard ND filters on the front of the lens, which I sometimes necessary for filming.

Sorry, I know it's a dumb question, but I would like another perspective, maybe something I'm not considering.

If you already have a 24-105 and 70-200, a 24-70 would be superfluous. So you wouldn't bring 1 of the lenses with you anyway. Are you dissatisfied with the 24-105?
The 14-24 would open up a new range for you, so I would definitely get that if you often feel like you would want a wider lens and are generally satisfied with the 24-105.

The 14-24 will give you some drastically different images and even though the 24-70 is good super wide is also just more fun. Also it's a ridicullously sharp lens, even compared to the Sony.

Also there is a good set of ND filters for the rear mount available now from Haida (Haida NanoPro MC Rear Filter Set).

This is because, unlike popular misconception, the sensor size itself doesn't determine the DOF. The lens determines this and normally lenses are created to match a certain sensor size. So, if you use a lens made for FF on a crop sensor, the DOF remains the same, but if you use the crop sensor's lens the DOF will change. Picked up this 50mm f1.4 Canon FD lens for $60. This was shot wide open with minimal corrections done in lightroom (removed CA, clarity +5, contrast +7) and I'm thoroughly impressed. Its as sharp as a new lens wide open.

in comparison here is my 35mm f1.8 that I spent $750 on. Sharpness is good wide open across the frame but I don't think its as sharp or as contrasty as the 50mm f1.4 when its stopped down.

First thing, you usually shoot night ladscape scenes on tripod and on long exposures. Lens aperture is not that important. Lenses rarely perform at best when at low apertures, they need to be used at f4 to f8 for best corner performance. Then it all just depends on the type of landscape you do, and have available. Every focal ranges can be made to work. From very wide to telephoto, so generally a good landscape lens choice will be something like Canon ef 24-70mm f/4. You don't need ultra thin depth of field, so f4 do fine in most situations.

Pentax K100D takes AA batteries. It's the only one I know of, but it would fit your extremely low budget.
Any DSLR can switch lenses, that's their point. The lens must fit the camera of course. Every manufacturer has their own mount, many have various mounts.

Looking for baby's first portrait lens for focal range of 50 or 55mm. Currently considering pic related. Is it still viable today? The 55 is a great lens. Perfect for street and portraits. Only downside is the CA that you can get, but it's easily fixed in post. The 50/1.4 is a great lens, but you might have to go through a few because of the quality control issues. If you get a good one, then it'll be a keeper forever.

I have the 55 and love what it does for me, but as soon as Sigma announce their 50/1.2, I'm getting that ASAP

I'd also recommend the 85/1.8 if you're looking for a portrait lens. It's excellent.

The Pentax K series has 4 different battery types. The older ones use AA, AA or CR-V3. Some can use a battery grip (D-BG4) which takes D-LI90 or 6 AA batteries(link at bottom). Pretty much all the newer ones take D-LI90 or D-LI109 which are not compatible between each other. These latter two have a very large 3rd party market. There's pretty much no real transition between AA and the D-LI90 & D-LI109 models. The K-r actually has an optional AA holder you can use.

If I were choosing based on this, I'd get one that uses the D-Li90 batteries and allows for a battery grip. You can get them cheaply, like 2 batteries + battery charger for $20 on amazon and are compatible with a laundry list of K-series, some of which can use the battery grip. The Pentax 645Z & 645D bodies also use D-Li90. The D-LI109 battery also has a laundry list of camera bodies, so you should be able to pick and choose as needed. The more cameras there are for a battery type the longer it will be made by 3rd party manufacturers. Both D-LI90 or D-LI109 lines will probably outlive you.

It really depends on the image diameter the lens casts on the sensor. Most are not going to make it and you end up with a dot of image instead of a normal square image. As this >>3610109 anon states, they can be amazing for reverse lens macro shots. But, for that you need reverse rings with filter threads that match the lens' filter threads. Of course. I do that all the time. The reverse rings are still nice even if the lens doesn't have filter threads, since you can epoxy them to the lens anyway. It is nicer having metals ones than plastic ones, but the plastic ones are good for temp mockups with hot glue.

I just picked up a used ProMaster convertable monopod for $80.

It didn't come with the head, but it had the cut-outs in the legs. I see images of just the monopod with legs that don't have the cut-outs, so maybe I got the video version without the head. I bought a ball-head for my camera though. its in immaculate condition.

I have used a Minolta and Nikon lens adapter. It does feel a bit weird, but it doesn't really change the focal distance or anything like that as the adapter is supposedly made to match the original length of the sensor-to-lens.

The only thing is there is more air your sensor is going through before it gets to the lens, so I'm not sure about quality comparison, I don't really tell a difference in quality due to the adapter, but I always assume my quality issues may be the lenses? Not sure how I can test.

Does it "feel weird": Not necessarily. I put ton a 50mm lens and with extension tube it feels like I'm riding a 80mm. If you really like pancake lenses, I doubt you'd like it. If you are normally using different length lenses and some zoom, it won't feel uncomfortable at all.

Not many. True equivalency means equal total light gathering, so you must remember to multiply the Aperture by Factor 1,5 to get proper comparison.

And at that point you won't be saving anything in terms of size.

What do you think of Chinese lens makers like Meike or 7artisans?
It looks like they make lenses with internal adapters that they can swap between mount types, so they usually offer three or four mount types per lens.

Mirrorles tend to have it, but it's often under-reported feature, since asians have some upskirting laws.

Basically you look at shutter speed values, and spec sheets. If cam is reported to have fastest shutter speed of 1/4000s or 1/8000s it'll be mechanical only. 1/8000 is the highest limit that mechanical shutter has, while silent can go up to 1/32000 easily.

In this example camera with 1/4000 will be mechanical only, and 1/16000 will have silent shutter. You look at this line:

"Electronic shutter," is what it is called and all you need to look for. It also sucks ass due to really bad rolling shutter effects with anything moving or with lights. Not global shutter. No consumer grade camera has a global shutter yet. Only global shutters for cameras exist in medical and industrial equipment. The a9 still has rolling shutter, it is merely faster and shows up less so most normies think it is global.

You're going to need a tripod no matter that size your sensor is.

The exposure isn't the problem thanks to Tripod. The size of the bigger sensor will help you freeze movement a little bit better.

No. It's the total light.
Imagine you have a canvas of 6000x4000 pixels on both sensors.

The large sensor will paint that canvas with more light.
The smaller sensor will paint that canvas with less light. (more noise)

Ah you mean shot noise and digital noise differences. Shot noise is the property of light while digital noise is all the problems with the camera. Since the pixels are smaller there more of a chance to pick out the shot noise. Yeah, no getting around that unless pixel size increases, but then you start to lose detail in other areas.

I think there is confusion between sensor size and pixel size. If we were talking about film then it wouldn't matter, but since it is digital then it matters a great deal since pixel size radically changes how much noise there is and normally smaller sensors have more pixels which are smaller than the larger sensors.

I have a Q7 which has a smaller sensor than the MFT cameras and it is noisy as shit. It is so noisy that Pentax has an anti-noise filter that auto engages around either ISO400 or ISO800, which can't fully be turned off. Thus, knowing about the different types of noise and diffraction limits, in relation to sensor and pixel sizes, is something I'm interested in.

I'm a DX Nikon user looking for more primes to round out a collection. Long term I'd like to pick up a supertelephoto lens and a fast 70-200, but for now I'm trying to focus on primes because of the high performance for the cost, since most of my stuff doesn't require zoom.
I guess for starters, is there a general opinion on third party versus Nikon glass? I've seen some arguments that third party makers have lower quality control and the coatings produce less pleasant colors in images as compared to Nikon. However, I own one Tamron prime so far (the 90mm macro) and I'm really happy with it. I like their "Tap-in" dock, and I like the way it lets me make autofocus microadjustments at differing levels for different distances, not to mention the focus range controls. These features and higher level of control, plus the lens having VC, makes me feel like these Tamron primes have an edge over the Nikon ones.
All this to say, I'm strongly considering picking up the Tamron 45mm prime, and eventually I might pick up the 35mm 1.4 or 1.8. (I have the nikon 35mm 1.8 but I kinda dropped it onto a hardwood floor and now the AF motor is kinda fucky). Does anyone have any advice one way or the other on this move?
Lastly, for >35mm, Tamron primes cover all the bases I care for. However, in the <35mm range, the Nikon 20mm and 24mm 1.8G lenses seem to not have any competition in the price bracket. Anybody know of an option I'm missing there, or would those be the go-to lenses at their price points?

I have an Olympus E-510 with a Zuiko 14-54 f2.8 lens. The body is aging but serviceable, only real damage on it is the battery is old and doesn't last long and there's a crack on the screen. Otherwise the camera and lens work as well as they did when purchased.

Should I buy more lenses for the Oly or just get a new body with new glass instead of putting more money in the somewhat obsolete camera?

Should I try to sell my old Sigma lens on an abandonned platform and just buy a used EF mount version? has anyone tried adapting lense mounts themselves? it has digital only aperature, and I've always found most clip-in adapters ruin the optics.

I'm mainly interested in doing stills in low light. I like the Fuji's dedicated shutter speed and exposure dials, but apparently the Sony's two dials can be set to those with a mode. I want to learn to use manual focus, so autofocus isn't a priority.
In either case I'll probably be using adapters and third party lenses.

Still not sure which to pick - Sony Nex 7 or Fuji X-E1 - since the conversation was derailed by the guy advising me to use something completely unsuitable, then struggling mightily against anyone who didn't think it was particularly on point.

if you can get the fuji x-e2. It's so much better in terms of buffer...wifi connectivity...etc.

I use mine with xf 27mm, a zonlai 22mm (manual focus) and a couple adapted pentaxes I use for portraits (50mm 1.7 and 130mm)

My favourite lens is the 50mm. The 27mm is sharper but I dunno, the photos from the 50mm just look nicer.

What entry level/intuitive to use DSLR or mirrorless do I get her so she can have fun with photography again? I don't really know enough about modern bodies to find a place to start.

I'm going for a certain personal project in which I need to place two separate cameras as close to one another as possible. Is an action camera the best type to fit the bill?
My requirements:

>Individually mountable on a custom rig (threading for a tripod screw, idk)

I don't need a camera capable of action, just for a small form factor. If action cameras are the way to go, which as far as I can tell they are, what brands/models are recommended?
