A classic setup for portraiture, is 3 lights:
1. key, say at a 45º angle on the right of the camera
2. fill, say straight on. If you skip the fill, you get harsh shadows and crushed blacks
3. hairlight, for the side/back of the model's head
Try a ration of 8:1 as a starting point (i.e. fill 3 stops darker than key).
If you want to light the background, a 4th light as well. Wanna add some drama? Add an extra light at 135º to the right of the camera (i.e. coming at an angle from the back of the model's head), to highlight the temple and cheekbones.
Also, continuous lights are obviously much easier to visualise and setup compared to strobes.
