I can't look at most of his landscape-related images anymore without feeling disappointed. Most of that series is heavily processed (either digital or darkroom doesn't matter) to the point that animals look plastic, things get halos and silhouette. It's basically bad tone mapping. I can't unsee those birds and seals. That aside, the guy obviously still has huge merits.

But that's not the point. I know what you mean, I may agree with it. But having a halo so evident that the goddamn bird looks copy pasted from another photo is a different thing. This is just tacky.

I'll say it. The dude knows his stuff. I'm sure he's perfectly aware that these aren't "good pictures" in the sense you mean.
These are products aimed at the taste of his customers, and that's newly rich Silicon Valley types who have big modern minimalist houses with all-white interior. They want big prints with glaring colors and oversaturated textures, that will actually pop from a distance.
Ken knows who he has to target to make the most bucks per print, and he does that perfectly.

Also take a look at Koudelka's The Wall. A whole book on the wall between Israel and Palestine. All photos are in panoramic format. That and Parke are my favorites at the moment.

Not the one who posted it, but I also got Contact Sheets and it's an awesome book. You certainly learn how to pick your best shot and the stories behind well known photographs make it even more interesting.

If you liked Genesis even just aesthetically, check Inferno (by Nachtwey).
Much "stronger" book though; instead of looking at animals going on with their lives in dramatic B&W compositions, you'll get the same with humans, only they'll be getting starved and maimed through war.

As far as books are concerned?
Salgado's Kuwait and Africa are MUCH better then Genesis imo and have much stronger narratives (especially Kuwait). If we're sticking to important Magnum photographer's >>3607505 and >>3607549 are both right in suggesting Magnum's contact sheets and Koudelka's work is also very very nice imo although I would suggest Gypsies, it's usually considered his most essential work. I'd also say check out the work of Raymond Depardon, Chien Chi-Chang, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, easily my favorite photographers of theirs.
