Hot take:

Adams' photographs aren't great. He was a great theorist and smart dude who worked out the zone system. He understood how cameras and film and developing worked extremely well. But his photographs are mediocre and would get easily lost in today's world, unlike other photographic greats whose work stands the test of time and have a particular, inherent 'look' to their composition and strategies.

His entire catalog might not stand up as well as others, but that has a lot to do with his subject matter. Tetons and the Snake River and especially Mt. Williamson are iconic as hell for a reason, and they might still net awards today.

this, he took a lot of pictures of many things, and stuff like his portraits don't really stand out. But you can't blame him, since he was shooting make a living rather than shooting everything for the gallery.

But his top tier stuff like snake river or moonrise would still be timeless today

Again, as landscape photos his photos do nothing for me. That moonrise shot everyone memes about has an abysmal composition. For the time or whatever, sure it was a great and exciting photo. Why people still jerk off over him as a landscape photographer I don't really understand. Moonrise is from the 1940s. There was incredible work being made by other photographers during that time (Brett Weston for example).

People look up to Ansel not only because he was a great photographer and also a pioneer in the darkroom but because he was one of the most prolific educators on the subject. He wrote three of the best books on photography technique in history. Also he had a hugely open mind and experimented with things like Polaroid film and other experimental techniques so people associate him with being a great educator and an active part of progressing photography.

It's kind of like getting mad Bob Ross is a famous painter when he isn't the "best". Bob did more to educate and inspire photography through his work. Same as Ansel.

Ansels shots were eerie and vast. Bretts work is pretty narrow and texture based. I feel like they’re both great but prefer Ansels work in terms of landscapes since they envoke more.

Weston tucked in pretty hard towards tighter shots with strong abstract chops. Ansel was often wide open shots where you can practically hear Fanfare for the Common Man echoing in the background.

Ansel did do some cooler scaled down stuff, and I enjoyed those more than another high contrast vista. I can't upload images from my mobile ISP, but checkout Ansel's hoover dam stuff. There's a fun composition with some skewed power line towers he did.

Anson's signature was how he managed contrast in black-and-white scenes (how he did so was well documented in his books).
Weston's photos are more about the texture of the scene

Different artists, different styles.

It's sort of like complaining that Michael Kenna is a shit photographer because he doesn't shoot color, or complaining that Franco Fontana's black&white pictures are average (when his color photos are outstanding)

Adams' work has stood the test of time much like Michael Kenna's. Every fucking boomer with money and some interest in photography copied his style, one of the reasons being It's easy af to do so. And now every landscape photo looks the same. His work isn’t bad, It's just really fucking overdone and it paved the way towards boomer photography. If he was a movie director, he would be Spielberg.
