I'm readying this one right now and it does seem great so far, but not aimed at beginners and doesn't seem focused on explaining concepts, more providing insight on things the reader is already expected to be familiar with. As far as instructional books go, I recommend Michael Freeman's stuff for beginners. I read "perfect exposure" and then "the photographer's eye" and I I think they're better than the "understanding exposure" one that always gets posted here, although I haven't read that one in its entirety (the scan in the sticky is barely legible). Freeman has a good system for explaining and introducing basic concepts, and between those two books you get a comprehensive overview. The pdfs linked in the sticky are pretty low res though, the text is perfectly legible but the images are shit. You can find higher res versions of most of them online, even if it's sort of a pain in the ass. He seems like a talented photojournalist, but there's definitely better fine art photography in this one >>3612833 if you're looking for nice images.

Avoid this fucker. Bruce intentionally avoids any tech or technique talk, and rather spends whole book mussing about psychology and empty words. He writes well, but his work is heavily edited, to the point of being photomontages, a far cry from photography. But he'll spew random bs like gear doesn't matter, and get it on the scene in the book.

the single most amazing book on photography in existance is the Manual Of Closeup Photography by Lefkowitz. this book singlehandedly taught me how to compose photographs and all about photography whilist also being a treasure trove of information specifically on macro techniques. pls read

For the "canon" photobooks like The Americans etc. is it even worth viewing if I only have access to scans? Rather, just how big is the gap between seeing the photos in print vs digitally, especially if the digital version available is just some anon's scan using god knows what equipment? I've heard people say things like seeing Ansel Adams through a screen doesn't do him justice, so should I even bother?

I wouldn't even know where to find a lot of these books short of buying them, and I don't have much space to accumulate physical media.

you should absolutely have the books in hand to fully appreciate the work, lots of people work very very hard to get the prints precisely as intended for publication and that work, as you said, is not going to be adequately reproduced by some dipshit with his flatbed scanner.

but it's not like you shouldn't seek the stuff out regardless. browse through the scans and if there's something that really connects with you by the book to appreciate it fully.

Only about halfway through it though and this guy is really good. I was hoping for something slightly more pornographic but this is definitely a great start.
