>>3617740>But the 14-24 at its best focal length and aperture gets beat by a number of lenses and gets its ass handed to it by some moderate and super telephoto primes. This is precisely why gearwhoring sucks. Nobody who needs a 14-24mm focal length range is going to opt for a telephoto prime because it's sharper. It's literally an apples and orange comparison. At least stick to lenses within that range if you're going to compare. Sharpness by itself in a specific lens means nothing if it's not a lens you want. Yeah, some telephoto primes are indeed quite sharp, but they do me no good if what I need is a 14mm field of view.
Oddly enough, the 14-24 has held its own for many years. I've gotten really strong results from it myself, actually. There's a few lenses in that focal length range that actually beat it, but almost none of them are zoom lenses, and this can matter a lot because the change from 14 to 15 or 15 to 17 is actually quite a big one. Then you have lenses like Canon's 11-24 which pretty much just break even, while also costing $1000 more.
The kind of lens the 14-24 is was pretty revolutionary for the time, and while its definitely aged, it's still really quite good. A lot of my favorite images were shot on it. Not my "sharpest" images, no, but my favorites, and that's what's important, I think.
