Does /p/ use an (external) light meter to take photos? How useful are they and are they necessary? Can you just get by by using the light meter inside of your camera?

great for film and video
not that useful for digital photos unless you use continuous lighting and need to repeat ratios for a commerical sort of shoot

Light meter inside camera is fine. If you have a camera with no lightmeter then a phone app is fine too. I use a cheap vivitar 43 lightmeter that seems to work just fine for exposure, though it overexposed by 2/3rds stop. I just compensate for that and haven't had any issues. Even ran a roll of ektachrome through it w/ only that as my meter.

hey anon, how do you use it for video? you set the shutter speed to 180deg, set the ISO to as low as possible and then you adjust the aperture based on those two parameters. how does a light meter fit into this equation?

I'd like a meter for my old Mamiya C3, but fuck light meters are expensive.
Even used ones aren't exactly cheap.
Instead I just use a phone app or eyeball it.

I use a sekonic l308 that i bought cheap, i find them useful to help meter strobes, complex scene or when im using a film camera without a meter but not always necessary.

Yes and no, depends on how you want to expose picture and usually a most in-camera meter does the job 90% as good as a external light meter.

they're absolute garbage for that. sometimes even a full-stop away from the right exposure. I've tried every app on the app store and none of them work well. I was trying to lighten (kek) my backpack and eliminate light meter but it's impossible to replace.

Only if the camera doesn't have one (or a really shitty one).
I have a Sekonic L28c2 that I bought for $20 off ebay.
It still works perfectly fine and I use regularly. Sometimes I'll use an app on my phone to measure reflected light, it works fine too.

I might get a newer meter someday to do flash stuff, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

The best disposable lightmeter cams I've found to be sony full frame alphas.
They're cheap af, have good sensitivity, and with the terrible ergonomics and easy water damage, they're not fit for photography anyway.

This is not a good way to expose for video. You decide on the shot, then light and expose properly. You don't shift depth of field around to fix exposure, you use lights or ND.

If it's bright out, I shot at 1/1000 at f8-16 depending on where the sun is
Open to f5.6 in the shadows, and I lower the shutter speed when I'm inside and shoot wide opened
Also it depends on the film, but I usually shoot iso400 black and white film

I want to start using medium format and older 35mm camera's and I used an app on my phone a few days ago. If that doesn't turn out to work well I may have to use one of my smaller digital camera's or get a lightmeter, even though I think lightmeters (with a display) are a bit expensive.

okay but seriosuly ive gotten a mf camera recently and im rly interested in doing night photography, like with tripod and long exposures w/ shutter release cable. will my camera be able to meter for it correctly despite it being under, say, a 1 second exposure? or would i need to get a meter or use a phone as a cheeseball way of getting a meter, and then shooting builb?
