With my Canon P I usually sling it over one shoulder with that arm holding onto the camera, I have the strap length at the longest so it's about at my waist. that feels better for that camera but with SLRs it doesn't work imo so I don't use one.

You should put it on your other shoulder, cross-body. That way it won't fall off / can't be pulled off of you. The strap would of course need to be a bit longer to do this and still carry it at your waist.

I've tried it a few times it gets unconformable and overall feels retarded.
I find over one shoulder the best for me, It encourages me to take photos because the camera is actually in my hand rather than it dangling on my neck/body.

Find an old 28-70 Canon kit lens from the 1980s that came with the EOS 650 and 620 cameras. They are renowned for their optics and their MTF charts are only bested by L lenses, and not by much, as long as you don't mind noisy AF.

The 50 STM is a good lens too, basically a Nifty Fifty with better coatings but the optics are from the FD mount era, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

The 28-200 you have is a decent walkaround that needs to be stopped down to at least F/8 for passable images. You'll like it though, I had one. Amongst all of the baller Nikon glass in my arsenal, in my bag next to my 50mm f1.2 AI-s, is a Quantaray 28-300 that I use for walkarounds, at F/8 it's alright just needs good light and a little post to make it shine.

The 70-210 F4, the Poor Man's L, is also a decent lens, and harks from the same era as that 28-70. My old Canon setup was a 5D Classic, before I went to Nikon. I started out with L lenses and sold them all when I found out I could get 99% of the performance of my 24-105L and 70-200 f4L IS from that 28-70 kit lens and the 70-210 f4. If you don't need stabilization and want an outstanding setup for not outstanding amounts of cash that is the poor man's setup and f you are careful you can find all 3 attached to an "old 35mm Canon camera" for sale on Craigslist or FB Marketplace for 50 dollars.

You can't get APS film unless respooled. Most labs can still develop it just fine since the machines are set up for it. I highly doubt they get more than a roll a year though.

My Paterson/Philips 202 arrived. This thing is awesome. Analyse dsrkest part of negative and it tells you the time, analyse lightest part and it additionally gives you the gradation. It's so easy.

My usual method gets a print from a good negative in 2 papers. Two test strips to find split filter, remainder of paper is used to confirm settings and tweak for burn/Dodge, then final print.

That's exactly how I did. Now it can be done with a single paper. The analyzer gives time and gradation for optimal contrast. I can still burn if I want to. Going to test this weekend and show results.

I had a spare at the ready. It did not improve things.

It fucking sucks. The camera was just right for me. Sweet panorama feature for certain situations, otherwise competent bright wide lens for low light shots. I guess I'll go back to lugging the Canon SLR around, or perhaps go to a Nikon AF600, or alternatively L35AF. Dunno. It's pretty shit, especially after hopping around between different compacts and never quite finding the right one until now.

You may have seen in the other thread, I had another one before this that turned up broken. Clearly I just have shit luck.

It does everything except actuate the shutter. Clearly a little capacitor that gets charged up to provide a burst of power to move the leaf shutter has kicked the bucket. The camera locks focus, moves the lens, but then produces no shutter click, and winds the film as if nothing were wrong. Sometimes it just turns off immediately afterwards, which matches one of the typical R1 failure modes. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Fortunately the film leader poking out on rewind feature has caused me to lose no rolls of film to testing it.

I mean rolls of film aren't magic, you can cut up larger film to fit it in to APS canisters if you really want to. I don't think anyone does it though. I know there are people who do it for 127 film. If you really want to shoot some APS and DIY a bit it sounds feasible to me to start from like a 30m bulk roll of film. Not sure how you would do the perforations correctly but it sounds like an interesting research project.

I'd say around this time last year was the last time I used a Tetenal product before everything fucked up for them. In the mean time I've tried Rollei Digibase, The premixed Rollei/Compared Digibase and even Cinestill's Powder chemistry and I gotta say they just don't work as well.
I'm so excited to finally use Tetenal Colortec C41 again, still no Colortec E6 available in my country unfortunately.

The Tetenal kits have the bleach/fixer in one bath which I find more consistent over the other kits which have them separate, I'd sometimes fuck up the bleach bath.

What aperture are you printing with? What is the power of your enlarger? 3 minutes is quite long and your paper will suffer from reciprocity failure. Why not open the lens up? Or is you neg just super dense?

This was at f/8 (grade 5 filter; 120s) with burn at f/4 (no filter; 60s). Consider the orange mask of color negative film. I'm basically printing through a filter already. Don't know about the power, never checked/replaced the bulb.

Depends how dark we're talking. Indoors with light, or outdoors at night with artifical lights, including subjects illuminated by street lights? 1600 should be good. You'll need a fast lens though, f/2 or faster. Darker than that or with less lighting, or if you're dealing with faster subjects, or a lens with a smaller max aperture, and you may need to go to 3200 or 6400.

Sounds good. Any reason why you don't open up a little to 5.6? If I recall rightly at grade 5 double the exposure time is needed to get the same density as compared to all other grade. Ilford may have fixed this with their modern filters, so it might be something to check out. It might be best to start out with printing b&w negs before using colour print film on b&w papers.

I'm using a filter set that needs compensation from grade 4. So, yes, I adjusted exposure considering the filter. No real reason to not open up to f/5.6. I just tend to work at f/8+.
It's not my first time doing prints. It's just the first time with the new timer and also the first time I tried printing from color neg.

Just don't dip your balls in it bro.

The standard stuff when developing will mainly give you bad skin with prolonged contact. Metol and hydroquionone can be a bit hairy, so be smart when you mix up the powder. Otherwise by premixed chems.

Fair enough, it's your time though. If there is no visible difference between F8 and F5.6 you might as well go for shorter times. The only reason to close down further is to find the sweet spot for the lens, and/or give you more time to play shadow puppets.

Depends on how much K glass you got, could nudge a k1000 or switch over to another common mount like F. If that's your home develop, avoid using squeegees or tongs to clean your film. just hang it, squirt a couple streaks of distilled water at the top and let it dry naturally. Great exposure though!

F mount stuff is cool but priced a little higher because of assholes like me who have baller FF digital setups that can take those lenses natively. Pre-AI lenses are a bit cheaper because next to no digital Nikons can mount them except for flagship bodies and even some of those won't unless they are AI modified. I say stick to K mount, Pantecks made some nice K mount lenses back then.

probably not but when you are done wash your hands and everything religiously, especially if you use Photographer's Formulary TF4 or TF5 rapid fixer I smelled that shit for 3 days after developing Fomapan 200 for the first time.

Definitely use gloves and if you have any open wounds or cuts on your hands you will find out where they are, even the vapors would get me sometimes.

pic related, this is ~$300 of glass and everything except the goofy third party 28 ($5) and the 80s budget 135 ($10) looks gorgeous.

Pen-A 50/2.8 Macro is razor sharp; nearly as sharp as a modern lens.
Pen-K 300/4 is reasonably sharp at F8, gives delicious creamy DOF at F4, and handles like a beauty
Tak 135/3.5 is very sharp and built like a champ
Tak 55/2 is new to me, not really sure what to think, not sure it was really worth getting but it was $50 so not like I broke the bank
Pen-M 50/1.4 is swirly and painterly at 1.4 and reasonably sharp (though far from clinical) at 5.6
Pen-M 50/1.7 is similar except with less of the swirly painterly end (duh)
"Takumar" Bayonet 135/2.5 is goofy and seriously flawed but I kind of like it anyways; wide open it's got horrendous abberations etc, but it's kind of a neat look (almost like a soft-focus lens) and it stop down okay.

oh, also, on the topic of that 28 "Super Lentar", I am kind of fond/affectionate for it, largely on the basis of the weird f-number (F3.0? anyone know any other F3.0 lenses, lmao?) and the extreme rarity of it. I've done some digging online and Lentars of that vintage were manufactured by Tokina, but it looks like the 3.0 was only made/sold for a year or two. after a bunch of digging I was able to find this scan of a magazine ad for it, comically enough with the F/3 crossed out and replaced by the much more common Lentar-badged Tokina 28/F2.8 (Tokina 28/F2.8s are everywhere).

Not a bad bit of obscurity for a lens found in the rummage bin at a thrift store for $5-10.

I stated looking after something qt and cheap to have it always in my backpack. Half-frame cameras hit the spot. But I don't know whats the relation between the frame's placement. One full-frame fits 2 half-frames, right?

I just downloaded photoshop and I'm trying to process color negatives I scanned with my DSLR. I tried every guide but at the end my shots turn out blue and ugly no matter what I do. Pic related. Here's what I get after messing around in lightroom for 2 minutes. I don't get why I can't do the same thing in photoshop. Even using the automatic film negative tool gives me a blue image. Looks like a good buy. a MF SLR in working order with 2 lenses for $200 is a good deal, period.

You might want to start looking at a 65 or 50mm lens, depending on whether you like the perspective that 90 gives you; my only frame of reference is my 6x6 TLR with an 80 and finding that a little limiting.

Now sure how that decision could "break" you. It will 100% need light seals by now. I bought mine from Aki-asahi. If you have steady hands, you can do all of them without trouble, including the mirror cushions and seals (just take your time and don't gouge the mirror). Make sure the lenses aren't super hazy or have internal fungus. When you get it, store the lenses decocked.

plustek 8100 film holder has frame divisions that almost exactly match the space between frames that leave regular 35mm cameras. so, if you add a second space between half frames, one of them might get partially obscured, like just a tiny bit, by the plastic frame dividers on the film holder. that is if you intend to scan both frames in one pass as if it was a single 35mm frame.
however, the film holder has plenty of sideways space to slide the 6 frame film strip left/right so you can scan 6 half frames in one go, then slide it a bit and scan the other 6 half frames.

the curves adjustment layer has an AUTO balance button. ALT + LEFT CLICK on it to get a panel with different color balance algorithms. try all the algorithms to see which one gives better results, also try the snap midtones check box on/off (not available on all algorithms). it depends on the particular pic which one will give better results.
you can do that AUTO thing before or after setting up an inversion adjustment layer, but it's better to do it after so you can better see the different algorithm results right away.

you can try setting your DSLR to flat colors. dunno what DSLR brand you use but on my Nikon it's called Picture Control>Flat profile.
it also has a setting called Active D-Lighting which boosts contrast. I turn that one OFF. better look if yours has something similar. you'd want to work on a flat image and then adjust contrast in post.

Small viewfinder with no framelines. But most soviet RFs are like that, except oddities like the Leningrad. On the plus side, you get a bright, contrasty rf patch, and an rf mechanism that doesn't fall out of calibration. This is due to using a beamsplitter and a long prism, instead of mirrored surfaces.

I have one as a backup to a Contax IIa. The Kiev 4 has a nice shutter thump.

maybe my bad luck. been trying to get a half frame since 2017. I bought half a dozen of olympus pen ee and three canon dial 35 half frame cameras just last year and none was working properly. dead exposure meters that lock the camera to a single shutter speed too slow to use in daylight, or stuck shutters.

I haven't tried soviet half frames yet, but seems like that'd be the route I'd be taking now. or just get fuck'd by the hipster tax and fork out the money for a olympus pen ft and be done with it...

the chaika seems like a good option, with the full manual controls. might get that or an agat18k. the problem with olympus pen is that they depend on the selenium exposure meter and if it dies, they get crippled.

Just held a Olympus 35 RC in my hand today and I want one now so I'm right there with you. The other things like the Bessa R and CL aren't really my style—I still prefer the Canon P or one of the VI-L or V-L rangefinders, but both pale to an M3 or M4P. The Pen F is nice but so expensive.

Stop trolling, SD card slots are for 110 and APS film, you'll need a CompactFlash slot to digitise 35mm film.
For 120 film a 3 12 floppy disk drive will do, 4x5 you'll need a 5 14 floppy disk drive and 8x10 you'll need a 8 inch floppy drive.

No. 35mm doesn't compare to the resolution or dynamic range current high end cameras are capable of. MF is still up for debate at this point depending on film and how you manage to scan it. But I do film because nothing compares to silver gelatin prints so I'm stuck with it for better or worse.

I've done repairs to my F-1 - bolts that fall out and stuff. Replaced the broken index glass on the lightmeter with slivers cut from a gel.

Yeah, I'd go back to that location whenever the lights are on and the sun is low/dramatic clouds. There's a really good shot hiding somewhere in there that you could capture if you get the model's head and shoulders above the wall. I'd almost want to be ankle level but the downward angle is nice so split the difference and sit on the stairs.

Beginner mistake, annoying your friends for a good photo is part of the fun, for you. I'd never suggest a TLR for anyone but a waist level finder as default makes you think about how low you want to go. Paying attention to the whole scene and how people stand out from negative space is the hardest part to get right at first and something I still forget about in the moment. It's also the easiest way to make photos stand out.

yea, seems like it. I've seen that kind of blots on old vision 3 film stock that had the anti-halation layer crudely removed at home before being shot.

NEVER get ECN-2 film developed at a C-41 minilab it can destroy the machine and ruin their business, even if the person you bought it off of online says the anti-halation layer is removed their could still be some reminiscence of the layer left over which will fuck up the minilab.
The big scratch and dots on >>3626537 goes to show how badly of a job the person you bought the film off of did.
On top of all of that C41 Chemistry don't do ECN-2 motion picture films any justice, you'll get superior results developed in ENC-2 chemistry.

I've shot 6x7 and it's probably a bit weaker than something like a D850 or A7R4 in some respects. In other respects it's better. It entirely depends on what you want from your shots. I have done meme 5000DPI scans from 6x7 for over 100MP images, doesn't mean there is all too much there you wouldn't be getting from a 3000DPI scan. Colour is generally quite nice still by the point film starts to be a little "soft" at high magnification. Digital stays sharp but colour starts to go earlier.

I should note that these are results from my own drum scanner, a Heidelberg can do a little better but I doubt anyone exists who can make non large format film compete with modern 35mm digital sensors. It wouldn't surprise me if one of those 645 150MP sony sensors did very well against 8x10.
The crazy high MP numbers you can get and colour quality are the one thing you can really squeeze out of film you can't out of digital so far.

Is it possible to over-bleach colour negative film?
I accidentally set the timer when blixing for a minute longer then I should of, I know it's impossible to over-fix film but I'm worried about the effect extending the time would have with the bleach part of the blix.

The worst I can see happening is softening the gelatin too much if you let it sit for hours (in any warm bath, even just water), making it easier to scratch.

The only processes where bleaching marginally affects the end image, is ECN-2 and the now obsolete E-4 process. There, the dyes are mostly formed but not 100%, they form fully when a strong bleach oxidises them, and that's why these processes use ferricyanide bleach (unlike C-41 or E-6). And even then, bleaching is done to completion and there aren't any reported ill effects of "overbleaching". Let alone in C-41 and E-6.

And yeah you're right with fixers. With modern films and fixers, you don't have to worry about "overfixing" in the slightest. The only ill-effect would be if you left it in the fixer for something like days, you might get a slight (uniform) reduction in density, i.e. the fixer starting to act as a very weak bleach. But talking about *days*.

It's one of the best manual focus cameras for actual shooting anon. It's all of the build quality, good ergonomics, and in general has all the right things without the bulk and weight of a body like a Contax RTS or an F3, etc. . The Pentax LX and the Olympus OM-4Ti are the best (manual focus) shooter's cameras imo, if money is not an object.

Literally the same thing except the ES-1 is meant for mounted slides. I modified a slide mount that allows for film to easily slide through it.

The ES-2 comes with a tray that takes a strip of film and slides through.

In retrospect, I'd buy an ES-2 but I got an ES-1 for $30 so whatever.

That's a horizontal shutter that's capping early, so either a slow opening shutter or fast closing shutter, either by speed of travel (uneven or just too slow) or time of release. "Shutter lag" is the phenomenon where the shutter doesn't open at all for some time after the user has pressed the shutter button; common on compact cameras and other silly shit, defect on SLRs and proper rangefinders and cameras too simple to exhibit any by design.

Not early, it just doesn't have enough tension on it so the first part of the image both shutters are overlapped and then it speeds up later. Depending on the camera model you can fix this fairly easily.
Required tools would be two small flathead screwdrivers
A tracing table or steady light source
A high-speed camera or shutter tester (high speed camera as in 960fps or faster. An S10 has this capability though you can get away with 240 fps if you position the camera vertically.

Basically, you tension the first curtain spring (depends on model which one this is, please look it up first before attempting) until you get even spacing between shutters for the entire exposure. 1/1000 should have precisely 3mm of space between them or somewhere close to that. 1/500 should have 6 ish. It doesn't have to be perfect but it does affect your shutter time and thus exposure, usually not more than 1/3rd of a stop.

very simple then. Remove the two screws on the bottom plate.
Remove the tripod socket washer.
Bottom plate is now removable (this exposes the film inside if there is any in there, so remove it first)
On the right there should be a curved washer with two gears. The gear on top is the second curtain. the gear on the bottom is the first curtain.
Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the middle screw so that it releases the curved washer/gear holder
Using a flathead screwdriver holding the gear in place, loosen the flathead screw in the center of the screw. This adds tension to the spring. Do about 1/4th to 1/8th of a turn. tighten the gear by moving your 2nd screwdriver in the same direction, until it is snug. Tighten the middle screw again while holding the gear in place
Put the curved washer/gear holder back in place and tighten the mechanism.

Test your shutter speed by dry firing it against a bright light. You should see the entire circle from the lens mount. If not, you either didn't tighten it enough or you lost all tension and need to start adding tension to get it back. Be careful about this process, since it can be easy to lose all tension and have to manually tighten it back to the correct exposure value which will take time. If you overtighten you risk breaking the shutter and making yourself have a brick.
Basically, you want to tighten it just enough so that the curtains no longer overlap, but only just barely, at the 1/1000th setting.

Good luck. The high speed camera is very useful in getting it perfectly calibrated, but you can eyeball it by just using what I mentioned earlier:
Loosen it until you see no image as you fire the shutter
Tighten it in 1/16th turns until you see a full circle
tighten and secure the gears
test for circle one last time
button it up.

It really depends on what you shoot. I personally am quite pleased with results I get shooting sunny 16 on colour neg but I fear doing it with slide film. Then again, I have shot some provia 100f doing sunny 16 and it worked out.

You can get external meters if you want to. I use an old external meter because my camera has a damaged meter. Phone apps reportedly work really well but I never got them to be accurate on my phone.

Thats unfortunate.
An old mechanic trick is to use tape on the end of the screwdriver, or use superglue/epoxy but I'd stick with tape at first.

got some old darkroom stuff yesterday in the hope of making some prints, there are 2 sets of ilford filters, the higher grades don't match between them though, the tray filters seem in better condition scratch wise but are they faded beyond use?

The problem is it's a 7 element / 6 group design, with an aperture which really really needs more correction. It's complete arse wide open, so why not just get a 50mm f/1.8? Only positives are focusing and number of aperture blades, but the modern 50mm f/1.8 STM resolve those lingering issues in the f/1.8. Nikon's old AF-D 50mm f/1.4 design is just as shit if not shitter than this lens, but when they reissued it as an AF-S lens they changed the optical formula to 8/7 and performance dramatically improved. Canon shouldn't have put an entry level design into a midrange lens.

what's the problem with it? with no lightmeter, you wouldn't be able to use either of the auto exposure modes (A and S).
google "minolta XD service manual". there's a PDF around with info on how to troubleshoot and fix those cameras.

I have the PDF and cannot seem to identify the exact issue. A few others have noted the same problem which is that on both S and A modes, the lightmeter reads an "Arrow Down" code, which I believe indicates underexposed. I looked at the film speed potentiometer to see if there was any damage or loose connections and it looked perfectly fine. I mean it isn't a huge deal since I wanted to shoot in Manual anyway

I'd stick with the tray ones for now they look the best or just buy a new set of multigrade filters if you're not sure. The 4 stop tray one however looks a but faded

that same HP5@800 (meter set to 640 IIRC), this time through a Pentax-A 50/2.8 Macro at F16, through a 10 stop ND filter.

clusterfuck of settings/pushing/ND, I know, but it was bright and I had like 3 frames left to kill on this roll.
