Its working as intended. If you set the autofocus to auto its just gonna find whatevers closest and assume thats what you wanted to focus on. Cameras are tools and you don't deserve an A7R2 if you can't master basic shit like selecting autofocus points.

It has its place. You just got to know how technology behaves - where it'll be a benefit and where it'll be a drawback.

do you understand how autofocus systems work? they detect edges, either vertical or horizontal. your subject has neither and everything around it has both.
