i'll have to do some digging. it's pretty fucking hard to do the minimalistic thing well because you can't divorce your image from reality. So your first instinct is "oh that's a wall." And the ones who DO do it well don't try to render it into some 2D abstraction with no depth.

Nah, they're very flat. Say it with me: foreground, middle ground, background. Get some depth in your scenes. Right now you're treating your camera like your index finger. You're pointing at stuff, saying LOOK AT THIS, NOW LOOK AT THIS, NOW LOOK AT THIS. It's very boring and one dimensional. Try to envision the scene as a whole. Get some stuff between you and your subject to help frame it or to serve as a counterpoint. Get some stuff in the background to lend some context.

my pleasure. and do work on your technique for less blurry photos. Remember: noisy but sharp is always better than blurry but clean. Crank that ISO if you need to. Make a DIY tripod out of a string, a washer, and a 1/4x20 eyelet bolt from home depot. Brace yourself against a steady surface like you're a sniper.

I tried with my old D3000 and a basic tripod, manual shooting 100 exposures of 1,6s 1600iso at f1,8

I stacked 100 lights, 10 bias, 5 darks, and 5 flats.
Trying to understand how to use it tho, with a A7 i get "one frame will be stacked" and low star count even at 2% threshold and iso 8000 3,5s

One, you need to burn & dodge your images. Otherwise they look very flat
Two, don't be afraid to clone shit out. That power line is hella distracting and ruins the image. Didn't really fuck with the poewr line on the tree too much because, well, its difficult with such a tiny portion of the frame and its hardly noticeable.
Finally, you have so much in the foreground thats just taking up space. Next time get closer if you can.

Thanks friend. I tend to avoid Photoshop since I'm running a really old version but I gave it a try and cloned out the posts. I feel like I have too much negative space from the sky though, idk, I just have all the rules I've been told floating in my head.

As far as rules go, knowing them is one thing—knowing which ones to apply and which ones to ignore for a photograph is essential. Thank you, that's been very helpful. I've been using rule of thirds a lot for my photos and it hasn't been working for me. In my mind it was a universal rule but that was naive of me.

I'll focus more on negative space in the future. I've been doing leading lines as best I can when there are some available.

Rule of thirds only works if you include balance & weight in your photographs. Leading lines is a very specific tool which has it's uses, but shouldn't be forced for every image.

You can use a low ISO and exposure over 8sec with anything up to 200mm for general night sky images. Get a fast fish eye if you want to include some environment in your images. If you want to capture planets or nebula I'd recommend looking into star trackers to get blur free images.

New attempt today, tried to shoot at Antares, since it seemed where i could get most of milky way here, and got it, waoted for it to be on cenit, grabbed my d3000 and tethered shooting with a phone app, 110 shots. I think i nailed focus pretty good for using a viewfinder without a bahtinov mask or shit.
Tried 5s exposures at 800iso. Thanks for the advice, wise astro anon :')

I like it. That little nebulae top left of the center is very pretty and gives me a feeling of grandeur.

It's a hard hat with a "protective face mask" that doesn't protect you from shit. I accidentally burned my face against hot metal yesterday cause of that thing. I'm an auto mechanic for a large national quick-service chain. I spend all day hot and sweaty and covered in grease. Took the opportunity during a slow day to get some "on the job" pics.
