Another completely fucking retarded website like this is the new layout for Hentai Foundry.
They used to display thumbnails with a fixed height and resized things (aspect ratio changed but height was constant) but now they fit everything into a cropped square until you mouse-over. Half the time you're literally not even seeing faces in the thumbnail view. It's bad. Really bad. They're cropping art. Porn art but still. Cropping is cancer.
People really should stop using shitty sites. Use Flickr or something.
If people were smart people would start putting big bold "Stop cropping my uploads, fuck you Instagram" letters in their white squares and start a new trend to force Instashit to stop being gay but that'll never happen.

In practice, the main benefit to it is that people are viewing the images with toolbars, comments, and shit around the photo so the white is actually a bad thing but getting a "frameless" view is what's really good. Has nothing to do with white, black, whatever just the fact that the background at the edge of an image isn't clutter. Personally I prefer black or dark grey since it's more neutral.
