Now you need proper lenses for it as well. Razor sharp, apocromatic optics will not do, since there will be nothing to diffuse. You'll be just ruing sharpness of the lens. The lenses were the opposite of that. Chromatic as fuck, and intentionally soft. Sharpness wasn't in the vogue until the late 60's after all. When you take a look at early colour films, you can glance what they were all about. A slight backlight, glints, and classical lens flares like Christmass tree, turn that black and white, and it's beautiful glare!
So we have lenses used. Filters on lenses, and lighting. Finally you have development of film. All your images are developed in a classical darkroom, buy a full time expert. This was a major endeavour, akin to major postprocessing work, with notable labs and developers gaining fame and recognition. A LOT could be done on black and white film. A LOT LESS on colour film. This process is mostly dead today. But look at output of those few labs still running will give you an idea of what is still possible.
tldr. Format is irrelevant. Lenses, light, filters and film development is important.
