Took a good set of pics at Silent Pool the other day. They have their own Gin distillery, it's quite a cool place.

Is there anything obviously bad or good about the pics and do the white borders work?

I don't get the white borders.

Anyway I still play with the aspect ratio.
Original photo is 1.5:1
White borders version is 1.4:1
This one is 1.33:1

How about this one?

The one that you slightly preferred have the same aspect ratio of the original photo.

An addendum, I still don't know exactly what the white border is for. So maybe what I'm doing has nothing to do with the aesthetic purpose of such an effect, if it has one.

the white border makes it look like it's canvassed. It's meant to maintain the aspect ratio of the original image, but just extend each side proportionally

Your photo (6000x4000) 3:2 the WB (960x960) 1:1, now the WB is also 3:2 (960x640).

yeah I checked and I already shoot in 3:2, so I guess I didn't notice it switched to 16:9 on export for some reason. It should still be 3:2 even with the border. Weird

Nothing, it's simply that the scene you photographed did not have any attention grabbing colors. That's not inherently bad but there isn't much you can do about it.

Many people on /p/ will tell you that converting to black and white is always a snapshit option. This isn't true. If the colors don't add anything to the image, and you want to emphasize the lights/darks of the image more, then black and white is the genuinely the right option.

shit I didn't even notice that, good spot. I used the lens correction setting in Lightroom, but there's only so much you can fix about a kit lens

You can adjust chromatic aberration in addition to lens correction, it's in the next tab over I think

white borders give a sense of professionalism to photos
it also is negative space that works well on multiple platforms and websites. /p/ has an ugly blue color that looks shit as a backdrop for photos. White is neutral.
