Hello /p/ can you help me choose a Camera.

I want to buy a used camera with good zoom, these babies came across my path and I'm not sure what to pick.

Nikon Coolpix B500 ($125)
Nikon Coolpix P530 ($125)
Canon PowerShot SX40 HS ($125)
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400 ($160)

I want to snap birds and landscapes. I'm open to other suggestions but it will depend of what I have at hand in the market.
My limited experience comes from a Canon A720 IS(now defunct) and the Lumia Camera on Windows Phone(I learned a lot of what to do for night sky photos using manual controls)

I think shooting birds and landscapes require pretty different gear. I think any of those cameras would be fine for landscape though.

So your budget is around $150? Make sure you bring an SD card and test the cameras out. I don't want you to get scammed. Honestly most of these are about the same IMO, just buy the one that looks the newest and from the most trusted source.

If you want one with a viewfinder, seems like the $200 Sony is decent. Just make sure the glass isn't cracked. And the photos actually get written on your SD card.

Most importantly, don't just listen to me. Definitely ask for others' opinion.

Mate, if you can (and others will have other options) I’d suggest a Sony A65 or A77. 77 has weather sealed body. I got a 65 years ago when new, and still use it as my sports camera. Excellent focus speed. Kit lenses pretty good. Head of lenses when you want to upgrade.
>TLDR Sony A Mount is good glass, great sensors, best focus for action- birds in your case, and probably best value proposition for you.
I’m not a Sony fanboy btw, I just have one, for sports, because it’s fucking awesome for that.

Agreed, this is a better idea and will serve OP better in the long run. Bridge cameras aren't bad, but a DSLR will last longer and be more upgradeable and just overall better in almost every way. A Nikon D3200 or D5200 are both great starters and can be found for cheap on eBay with a kit lens

With the recommended DSLRs you'll need very long focal length lenses to get birds because of the (comparably) large sensors; long lenses of acceptable quality tend to be expensive. There's (imo) no way you'll sna birds with a kit-lens, but landscape stuff is absolutely possible and for that you'd actually get a meaningful advantage out of a large sensor compared to birding.

No, bridge cameras are cell phone sensors shoved in a needlessly bulky body. It's really not hard to find a budget zoom lens with optical stabilisation for Nikon or Canon.

If the only marketing of a camera is MUH ZOOM then they're targeting absolute idiots who don't know what sensor size, lens aperture, dynamic range etc means. The difference between your phone and a decent DSLR is sensor size + good lenses. Neither of those are in bridge cameras which is why they're bargain bin cameras.

If you're on a budget then get an older DSLR, even the older ones knock the shit out of a phone/bridge camera (same thing).

Look up a Canon 500D/Rebel T1i (US name). Or the Nikon D60 through to the D80. Easily found with low shutter counts on ebay/ke. Both of them have budget zooms which you can find in mint condition on ebay/keh. The 75-300mm zoom lens is a good place to start for Canon, the 55-200mm good for Nikon.

That's not really what I'm saying.

The decision that will have to be made is between cheap, non-upgradeable cameras that are, concerning their effective lens focal lengths because of their small sensors, usable for bird-shooting as you'll get high magnification, and cheap DSLRs that can easily be upgraded through buying a nicer/different lens in the future, will provide better image quality with equivalent lenses to the bridge cameras because of a bigger sensor and therefore the ability to (potentially) capture more light, but are at the same time not ready for bird-shooting out of the box because the kit-lens you'd get with them simply doesn't have the focal length to provide the magnification you'd need for bird-shooting, in my opinion at least.

If you absolutely want a camera for immediate bird-shooting, you'll need to pick the one with the longest focal length out of the box, but need to realize that their sensor is comparably garbage and you'd get much beter results from a DSLR, for which you'd need a proper lens however.
If you can deal with the kit-lens on a DSLR (maybe look up what kind of photos you'd get with, say, a 16-55mm lens on APSC-sensors if you have no idea what to expect) and make do with the lacking focal length for bird-shooting until you can afford a proper lens and at the same time have a MUCH better experience for landscape-shots as stopped-down (high-F-number/small aperture) kit-lenses on DSLRs can still produce great results, then DSLRs are absolutely the way to go.

And depending on the quality you're expecting, there definitely are affordable long focal length lenses for the DSLR of your choice, but you MIGHT not afford them upfront.

Honestly the kit lenses for Canon or Nikon are probably all he'll need. There's a reason most people never upgrade beyond them. But both have dirt cheap zoom lenses, especially on the used/refurb market. Bird photography is one of the cheapest things to get into.

I personally started out with a Sony Nex 5n and although my cameras now are better on paper, the images they take are not much different. I still go back and use "old" DSLRs for fun. Cameras haven't evolved massively in recent years except for video.

Every camera company provides some kind of budget zoom. Canon and Nikon have been around for so long that they have the lowest prices and easiest availability. Canon especially comes out on the cheap end. Focus on gathering good lenses, camera bodies come and go over the years but lenses can carry on with you as you upgrade. Lenses are the important part, that's why you're fine with an older or budget DSLR.

I have a Nikon D40 and a 55-200 lens. It is perfectly functional for bird photos, especially given the budget (see pic related). I haven't checked recently, but you could easily get this or maybe a better setup in good condition for under $200, maybe even under $150.

Something like a D200/300 might be a better deal, with higher resolution and compatibility with any Nikon lens (D40 doesn't have internal focus motor), albeit a little more expensive.

You can certainly get nice bird pics, and of course and lenses you buy in the future can be used on another Nikon.

Keep in mind that a 200mm lens with 1.5x crop sensor is only 300mm equivalent, which is 1.5x more magnification than your old A720. For this photo anon had to get within some three meters of the bird.

Cool. Like I said. I shot with the T6. And it's seriously great.

So this would be my check list in person.

1) Any chips or scratches on the glass? Chips on the plastic is no big deal but it does give a sense of how heavily the camera was used.

2) Bring your SD card. Take a picture of a bright white wall. check to see if the photo wrote on the SD card.

3) Now zoom around on the white picture. If you see dark spots, It's probably just some dust on the sensor. Or it could be scratched even though that's less likely. (if you want to be really thorough, you can ask him to put the camera to sensor cleaning mode, and take the lens off to Check the sensor. You would probably annoy him at that point, so up to you if you want to ask.)

4) Be very ready to walk away from the sale. If it's not a good deal; don't buy it.

Was my first choice back when choosing first dslr (well, this one's an slt) because a friend had an a77 and kept bragging about that superior EVF. (Ended up getting a d7000 though).

Looking at the specs, the a57 is definitely superior, having more and better AF points and 12 fps. Do note that they don't mention the buffer size on either, looked it up and it fits 21 raw images, which isn't too bad, I guess, just don't expect it to last longer than 2 seconds at the maximum rate.
Dunno about the EVF on this one but on higher-end models they were quite nifty: easy to get the exposure right, manually focus etc. It's probably laggy and noisy in low light though.
The whole concept of SLTs such as the a57 is kinda flawed though, it's like mirrorless but worse: bulkier and with a delicate fixed mirror (actually a thin film) which doesn't move out of the way when the shot is taken (which is why it can go up to 12 fps), except it doesn't turn completely transparent when a shot is taken and gobbles up a third of a stop of light. Probably not the end of the world though.
Afaik the native lens selection for the A mount is kinda small, mostly old vintage Minolta stuff, can probably get it cheap though. Look up "beercan" (the f/4 one) if interested. The future of the A mount isn't really bright, it's competing with not only other companies' mounts, but also Sony's own E, wouldn't expect much from it. Dunno about lens adapters but an extra element in the AF system can't be good for reliability or accuracy.
Still definitely better than the Canon in the short run. In the long run though you probably don't want to invest in A-mount glass and instead collect glass from some other system with a longer flange distance (e.g. Nikon F) and then just migrate to it when you feel it's time to update the camera.

I had a Coolpix way back in 2009. It shot some great pictures, and is probably still pretty good under outdoor daylight conditions. I can only imagine what improvements have been made in the line. I'd go with that one. With premades, like laptops, I tend to go with what has worked in the past. (I have three Toshiba Satellites so far. Very reliable desu.)

The only thing is I am not sure how much a 50mm lens cost for that. I know for the Rebel is really cheap. So that's probably point for the Rebel.

Both are fine. Sigma and Tamron for Sony are superb but spendier than Canon third party. Canon third party lenses can be pretty crap. Sony has 7artisans however, if you're looking for cheap manual focus optics.

I’m just basing all this on having owned both the Rebel/450D and the A65. While I think of it, the rear screen on the canon doesn’t articulate, and is very low pixel count. Looked like shit even when they were the latest thing.

I say don't worry about it. I am a hobbyist, and I say I shoot about 10000 shots a year. The life expectancy of my A7ii is something like 200000 counts. So that's like 15 years give or take of shooting. I am planning on buying a new camera in a year or two. So it's not a problem for me at all.

A used Rebel probably still have like at least 50000 count left.

And it's not like as soon as a camera hits its shutter life expectancy, it will just break.

But I'm from the other direction--my main camera has a rated life expectancy of 150,000 shots.

Last time I checked it, which was about 8 months ago, I'd taken 618,646 photos on it.

It's still going strong.

The Alpha A57 but if it is sold, or the seller doesn't answer I plan on the T3 with 2 lenses instead...

It's up to you. I think the 50mm for that one is slightly more expensive than the Canon one.

Like $150 (Sony) vs $110 (Canon).

Hi /p/ A57 seller never responded and the Canon's didn't want to show more pictures of the equipment, very suspicious.

Found other offers, but with the lock down here I must check with them how and when.

Now I have this:
A37 - $300
Sony A37, 16mpx, vídeo 1080 60p, 3 lenses, Sony 18-55mm, Sigma 35-80mm with parasol and Minolta 50mm 1.7, all of them with automatic focus(?), charger and batery are originals

T6 - $250
Canon T6, lens 18-55mm and charger
has some scratches

and A58 - $350
Sony A58 10/10, charger, lens 18-55mm

Important question: Is Image Stabilization important?

Assuming your total budget is $350. I think between these 2. I would much rather buy the T6 and spend $100 on a 50mm.

Image Stabilization is not that important for landscape. Basically it just lets you shoot at a slower shutter speed.
