Is a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime lens good for shit like makeup photography? I’m deciding on what lens is best for my needs that I should buy besides the stock lens my Nikon came with..

Yeah. By makeup photography do you just mean portraits showcasing makeup? If so a 50mm prime is a great choice

Note that the results will also depend on if you are shooting full frame or crop

Lots of portraits yes, but I also want macro shots of eye makeup and lipsticks and such, and I’m having a horrendous time trying to not have the shots look distorted.

Does it have an internal focus motor?

Is the sensor crop or full frame?

I presume cost is somewhat prohibitive. 50mm is a popular portrait choice, but 85mm might be better. For macro shots, you should look at the close focus distance, and you can figure what sort of field of view a lens will give you from that distance.

I haven't used this specific lens, but if your camera has a focus motor the 50mm 1.8D is a good lens for less money, and iirc has less distortion

Nikon also makes specific macro lenses. whether or not you really need one depends on how macro you want to get

It’s a D3300 so yes to the crop sensor and no to then focus motor. It’s not the most professional of bodies, but for my level I think it fits the bill, would rather invest in lenses than a new body with my coronabucks.
I haven’t had this amount of free time in a while so that’s why I’m finally bringing out the old Nikon.

Please excuse me for my lack of knowledge.

Hey OP,have you spent that money on the body yet, if not buy a used D7100 (should be 300 dollars) and a 60mm F2.8D Macro,its shoot great portraits and good for macro (basically both) for a great price

forget the 50 then
105 macro is a go to for wedding photogs, it is a nice portrait length that gives very little distortion, as well as close up ring shots.
it should be perfect for what you want, but it is expensive.

the 60mm af-s 2.8 macro is also a good choice
it is a little less expensive, and very sharp

if your camera has an internal focus motor you can also try and find a used 60mm af-d

I'd get the AF-S 40mm Micro Nikkor if I were you, the 60mm that gets recommended means the camera will most likely be out of arms reach if you are shooting a tight headshot even. 40mm is gonna give you a more natural FoV on crop anyway.

It's also cheaper.

I'd suggest taking more photos so you understand what you physically cannot do with the kit lens and getting something to fill that gap rather than buying something that takes the same photo but "nicer"

This exact lens on a d7200 is my main portrait lens, mainly because I am poor, mainly because it was the first non-kit lens I bought and I've just grown to love it, it can be a little picky sometimes but she works well.

I use that exact lens, with manual focus because my d3100 does not have a motor but it's not a big problem. It's very sharp and i get some nice bokeh. Go for it!

The lens in the OP is one with a built-in motor anon. If you have the exact same one it should work with your D3100.

APS-C, 50mm F1.8 is what I use for portraits with my D500
Full Frame, you want an 85mm F1.8 or F1. 4 if you can stretch.

Incredibly sharp, beautiful bokeh, its literally a portrait lens. 50 is okay if you want a head and shoulders shot, but for make up i'd go closer.

200mm looks best here, but really, she's tilting her head in each shot so it's hard to be completely objective. But definitely between 100mm and 200mm you could say she looks at her best. If you put a gun to my head to choose, I'd say that the 200mm here shot here is the winner, despite the fact that the general view is that 85mm is the theoretical ideal.

Having used this lens plenty of times, I can vouch for it. It's almost TOO sharp. And the bokeh is creamy, Nikon is crazy for selling it at a higher price. It's a steal.

You can get the 50mm 1.8d if your camera has a focusing motor.
It is sharper at f4.0 and above.

The g version is only better full open.

Picked up a box of cheap glass at a rummage sale mostly k mount stuff...

Paid $50 for 6 lenses, but I shoot Nikon F D750.

Is it worth the adapter for $35?

Probably not for K-mount lenses when you shoot F-mount. The flange-focal distances are such that you're gonna have to either get a teleconvertor adapter or turn them all into dedicated macro lenses.

Might be worth it to play around with, but don't expect fantastic results.
