EM1 Mk II or Mk III for pro work?

I've decided to go with MFT after many years of enjoying my a7Ri but never being able to afford the lenses I wanted. I'm semi-pro and mostly do small portrait gigs and occasional weddings. I already know which lenses I'll be getting but I can't figure out if I should pony up the extra cash for the Mk3 over the Mk2. I want two bodies as well, so that complicates things.

its more of a budget issue. If you can afford the Mk iii go for it, if not go for the Mark ii.
If I were you I'd get the Mk ii then get f/2.8 zoom plus a prime

Get the mk II and invest in glass.

If you intend to do portraits and wedding, you won't be able to go for zoom lenses as you'll struggle in low light due to the M43 sensor size.

If you really are on a budget, get these lenses which will cover most of your needs :

17mm f/1.8
25mm f/1.8
45mmf/1.8

They can be bought for pretty cheap, especially on the second hand market.

If you plan to shoot outdoor mostly, get the 12-40 f/2.8. Its probably the sharpest zoom lens on the M43 system.

I say yes, go with an e-m ii, get the olympus 17mm 1.2 with the 45mm 1.8 or sigma 56mm 1.4
this is what you can expect of a good copy of the 45 1.8 wide open

Yeah but that thread keeps getting shitted up non stop by non m4/3 users and you can never have a genuine discussion.
If you scroll down, i posted 2 images straight from 4chinz /o/ that others took with their phone, and these trolls still responded 'soft" as if they were m4/3 pictures, never even tried to verify what they were looking at.
I bet you can post a fujifilm pic and they would still say "soft".
It's sad, i don't know how they don't get banned, my only guess is the mod on here is a Basednygger and hates fujifilm.

Having upgraded from MFT to FF, I was pretty annoyed at how difficult it was to get feedback on my photos in the previous MFT threads. If it wasn't ignored in favor of the current therapy session, it would get a small amount of feedback that was drowned out by shitposting or had shitpost responses that made discussions impossible. Jannies are trannies and this shit is getting old.

Mark II if you ask me. Only serious advantage Mark III has over it is handheld high resolution mode, but from the sound of it you're not into landscape or architecture where that would be beneficial. What's noticeable about Mark II is that it does not have a joystick. One of the last pro bodies that's still without it.

I'm going to go ahead with 2x MK IIs and save up the difference for Pro glass. Handheld high res does sound tempting but I don't think I'll get enough use out of it to justify the premium.

If it's not too late I suggest the G9. It's not an Olympus, but it has pretty much all of the features of the Mark II but priced less than $1000

It's my favorite MFT camera.

Oh forgot to mention: The only major downside to the G9 is the autofocus, but it works well enough if again you are shooting portraits. If you find yourself in situations where you can't refocus then obviously the Olympus is the choice for you, but for any additional video work on the side (the main benefit of MFT) the G9 is flat out better and has many of the tricks the Mk II has

This is not a "omg ff iz best" meme, but rather, contemporary portraiture has an utterly boring emphasis on blurry/dreamy backgrounds at expense of subject, and your clients will demand it.

Unless by portraiture you mean studio flash photography, in which case the MFT will be better (free high-depth-of-field and faster shutter speeds with shorter flashes), except for the fact that you'll lose subject compression. If you want it back, you'll need telephoto, which means you'll be physically far away from your subjects which sucks from a creative standpoint.

I think it's easy to tell which ones are shills at this point, since they like to shitpost endlessly once MFT is criticised or even mentioned. My Panasonic GH5 was a fun experiment with still photos, but I've since upgraded to a Canon 5DSR and the Pana is my dedicated video cam now.

A7R IV and good glass, plus a big RF strobe, plus a set of smaller Godox RF flashes.

If they don't pay you for this and all the post work in short order, probably just don't do the weddings.

I can kinda see portraits. A good prime can do a decent bit on MFT.

Not the weddings though. Too many shitty locations where important things happen. Too many situations in which a flash would be too annoying to use, even considering a photographer's acceptance that you will just need to mildly inconvenience some people by flashing them in the face during the event, you can't do it for every situation and performance.

Agree with this post. The f2.8 zooms are not fast enough for weddings and events on MFT unless you're in very well lit areas. Also you won't get much bokeh out of them either but depending on how good you are, it's not the end of the world.

If you're really focused on shooting for money, you could even skip the 12-40 and get a really nice prime. Like the Olympus 75mm f1.8/45mm f1.2

Sigma 56mm f1.4 is supposed to be quite good as well.
