I need to add some details to explain what motivated me here:
What I mainly did was to study my tool, the camera. This is a good thing as I'm a computer scientist. I tried to explore visual language, too, and I actually think a lot can be learned and directed.
But right now, I suspect that all this has blinded me: I memorized a tool, collected individual random pieces as proof of progress, never pursued anything substantial.
Rough themes in competitions gave me a guideline of what, where and how I could photograph. That kept me busy thoroughly and actually rather in a futile way.
But what if now I wanted to present something to the world outside or someone in particular? All of sudden I see meaning in the work/the creation, see pursuing a concrete task that may or may not be accomplished through photography. I really come to the conclusion that without such an underlying motive, photography is worth nothing.
