I have a Yashica t4s.

I do everything with it.

I've finally decided I want digital, to shoot video and reflect on the photos immediately. I still love film, but for practicality (essentially shooting/marketing/product), I want something faster but just as convenient.

I'm going to buy the Ricoh GRIII.

Is this a mistake?

My shooting has always been from a expressive POV, not a professional angle. When I started collecting film, I got SLRs with the hopes of collecting lenses and being able to shoot whatever I wanted from wherever in whatever light.

And somehow, after 4 years of shooting film, I've been shooting exclusively with my Yashica.

Although I want the GRIII for a slight more professional capacity, my style remains the same. I want to shoot things in environments, from an intimate POV, with a improvised or spontaneous spirit, essentially street photo.

My rationalization - buy an M100, find out it doesn't have this or that feature - buy a 5100 - find the same - essentially, end up with an A7III *(or coveting one), and realize all I wanted to do was shoot whenever inspiration strikes.

I see this as just getting to the point - i know how I use cameras, why fool myself into thinking I want to build a rig out of a mirrorless with 4k shooting when I know I just want to be spontaneous and ready.

The only downside with the GRIII I've found is that I DO want to shoot video. And apparently, there is nothing special about the GRIII's video.

I can live without changing the lenses, but if I might as well be shooting on my iphone... then yeah, maybe it's not worth the trouble.

Would anyone have recommendations for something in close in price point, with similar image quality, portability, and better video quality?

I have a D4 and a GR2. GR2 is great as a carry around snapshit/hefty upgrade to a cellphone but it is limited by it's speed and lack of lenses. If you're looking for a tiny camera to fulfill your daily snapshit needs and not have to lug around anything it's perfect, if you're looking to get paid with it you'll need a second camera that gives you more options.

Now I'm in! I've read the thread already some days ago and was inclined to answer - now I do.

I'm not OP, but an anon interested in the topic. The decision was on my table the last time about a year ago.

For the way OP photographs, at least the way he describes himself, keeping the camera fixed focal length in the 35mm (FF equivalent) region seems like a close fit. That literally cries out for the Ricoh GR series. I'd say go for it!

But I'm always in the middle of the options, very dissatisfied at that.
What makes me sick about the GRs is obviously the obviously the unavoidable dust problem. It just sucks to have a camera that puts spots on every picture. Because of the dust problem of compact cameras in general, also the problem of sharply drawing dirt or drops on the lens, I tend to rather go for interchangeable lenses. In this regard, the Canon EOS M5 with the 22mm f/2 lens would offer that as an attractive set. The Canon package is actually great, but not very compact for me, the camera doesn't feel snappy to me, but that may be because I didn't use it conventionally, but leave the tracking to the autofocus system (selection with touch-and-drag, thus starting the subject tracking and metering). I finally sold the bundle because the camera was too big for me, but at the same time inflexible for a trip, since available lenses are again large and actually rather weak. More annoyed me about the camera, i.e. that I often adjusted it manually, where I'd expect to use automatic modes tailored to my needs with more detailed settings. The Auto-ISO option to allow a particular minimum shutter speed is missing or an adjustment whether to fall below or exceed the 1/(focal length) is missing - this might not be important to a film photographer at the moment, for me Auto-ISO is a standard for digital cameras that I don't want to miss. You should also expect this from an Canon M100 or M200, as the M50 is similar here.

Since with a compact camera I mainly address to shoot unexpected situations (even pictures of presentation slides out of the plenum) my main requirement is flexibility that should be offered in a compact camera format. Especially searching for a small travel camera, I wanted a zoom lens where I could make use of a focal length in the range of 18-90mm fullframe equivalent - and I would have accepted limitations, such as poor resolution in the corners or at telephoto and wide-angle, at open aperture, as long as about 30mm (FF equivalent) gave a good result without compromise. I partly fulfilled this wish with the RX100 VA from Sony. Not a stroke of luck due image quality at higher ISO numbers. ISO 800 reveals quite some noise, it is therefore my max. limit Auto-ISO. Yet I guess the RX100VA is indeed the best compromise that I could have gone for.I want to optimize the switch-on limit for the ND filter. At the moment I set it manually and forgot it more than once to adjust it the next day or to take into account changing light conditions. Personally I don't care about the lens/image stabilization. I have come to appreciate the highlight-priority exposure mode and also zebras. Canon should really learn something here and likewise Sony should become more easy/more convenient to use, providing touch gestures. I only used manual focus as a test, the RX100VA offers a rough distance scale here, the EOS M5 provides no scale her. If you, OP, are used to working with fixed focus, the GR series offers the most convenient way here, with a fixed setting for the desired focus distance.

Personally, I'm still sounding out what I'd like in this compact camera segment. Reason makes me prioritize flexibility, usability and performance the Ricoh GR series, the system behind the camera the Canon M5. My situation may be significantly different, as I go for a DSLR with the respective lens, if dedicated photography is my main goal.

not op but I'm also thinking of getting an rx100va mainly for the popup evf as a pants front pocket compact. g5x ii is a bit heavier and only has contrast detect but has touch screen and better lens. if only sony will make an apsc rx100 type variant even with a fixed lens and snap mode, that would be my dream cam.

It has snap focus which is instant. I mean the OS. It lags out sometimes if you switch around settings too fast and yes it’s AF isn’t amazing but snap fixes that.

I realize that for video, no camera is going to do a good enough job to truly supplant my iPhone.

So if I want really nice stills in a no nonsense, super compact body, I still feel like the GRIII is the best option.

I'm considering RX100v as well, but again, for better video (that still isn't going to be considerably better than my own phone) and worse picture (but tons more flexibility), is it worth it?

Indeed they are! $0.99/lb. So the $0.87 is sort of an estimate based on googling the weight of it.

It had a roll of film half-loaded in it (like, the roll was half-shot but someone had opened the back so the cartridge was dangling out by a few inches of film) so it looked broken and sad sitting in the bin. I picked it up because I felt bad for it; I'd never even heard of a Yashica T4 before that. I noticed the Carl Zeiss lens, though, so vaguely thought "Huh, this might actually be worth something if it works".

Wasn't until I got out to my car and googled it that I realized it's a camera that goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay. Also: Yes, it works perfectly fine once I figured out how to get the old fucked-up film out of it.
