Point and shoots are going to be phased out as well.
A phone takes just as good video and stills as an entry level camera.

Regardless of whether or not South Korea is a particularly big market, the fact that Olympus is abandoning it entirely is not a good sign for Olympus.

First off, I don't hate Olympus, and I don't want them to fail. I'm not that guy.

I'm just saying that it's hard to spin abandoning an entire country as a positive thing for the company. That's not something you do if your company is doing great. That's a thing you do when the alternative is an even faster death.

Is it survivable? Of course. Could this be necessary for them to pull through their current trouble? Very much yes, that's why they're doing it. Is it a good sign for the overall health of their business? No.

If you read the article, Olympus says that it's due to the overall contracting camera market, not because of any specific Korean-Japanese animosity.

It's certainly possible that that's not actually the case, but given how bad this looks for the health of the company, one would think they'd rush to say "It's not because we're failing! It's just because Koreans started boycotting Japanese goods specifically!" if that were the reason.

They burned everything that was handed in.

In other industries you normally have a regional distributor who buys a shit ton of stock, and then they send small shipments to various local shops.
That has nothing to do with the main company.

Why is camera business so different from other businesses that the manufacturer somehow become part of the distribution chain?
Some other random distributor could still order batches of Olympus camera, couldn't they?

Olympus still have a capable lens designing team.
So they could become a 3rd party lens manufacturer like Tamron and Sigma.

They had some patents a few years back for mirrorless Full Frame optics. but they're going to have to hurry up with those plans if they still want to, because it's getting quite fierce with Samyang+Tamron+Sigma already having a massive headstart.

In my opinion they failed when they tried to keep fast PDAF as an exclusive feature for their high-end cameras which customers needed to pay 1500 bucks or above for.
The other manufacturers give customers fast PDAF already at the magical 500 dollar mark.

The 2nd problem is the cost.
Small & Light is good and can be used advantageously. But not if it's too expensive.
You need to combine Small & Light & Affordable when the competition is as fierce as it is today.
And consumers just can't afford the Olympus high-end when the competition offers them faster AF with beter image quality for cheaper.

Olympus has been in the red for many, many, many quarters in a row.
8 quarters in a row at some point if I recall correctly. It was just a matter of time before it became even worse.

I am buying an Olympus lens tomorrow and there is nothing stopping me. Olympus 12-100 f/4 (yeah, it's an f/8 FF equivalent that costs 1000 euros). I am going to enjoy the shit out of it on my travels with my Panasonic G9.

I decided not to go for the Sony A7III with Tamron 28-75 and 70-180.

Your argument defeated yourself actually. Since the gear you chose is relatively quite pricey compared to the more cheap alternatives with larger sensors.

This is a reoccurring problem with M34.
They are smaller and lighter, but not cheaper.

My G9 is 700 euros used (funnily I got it brand new on a discount for 750 euros). That's 1700 euros, + 250 euros for a prime. There is no mirrorless setup that would give me this focal range and sharpness, as the Oly 12-100 is probably the sharpest zoom out there for MFT.

I have enough to buy either an Olympus lens or the A7III + Tamron zooms and deciding on MFT for my travels. Fuji would be another choice but their 24-200 is soft as hell. Even the Sony 24-240 is soft.

I sometimes go to the beach with my G9 and a prime while snorkeling because if it gets stolen well, shit sucks but I could still buy another one. not risking it with a 2000 euros body alone.
