Hey, do you guys ever edit "found negatives"

I found about 30 years of family memories in negatives during the lock down here and have been pulling anything portfolio worthy and artsy/90's aesthetic postable to process later

Some of these are damaged beyond repair and most are of my family so those are going in a separate binder.

You guys ever do this type of thing?

I started doing a whole bunch of old family photos a while back with my flatbed.
It's fun to edit them because it brings back a lot of life to those old pictures.
Currently thinking about getting a Nikon ES-2 to speed things up, unfortunately they are out of stock everywhere though.

Sometimes I see boxes with old negatives or slides for sale at flea markets. It pains me that people would just dispose of their family history like this.
I get tempted to buy one of these boxes but I can't really justify the time and storage at this time.

Btw, does anyone have experience re-framing old slides? I have a bunch from the 60 that are in these thick plastic frames with glass.
Through the years dust has found it's way in, the glass has come loose, the film has warped...
I'd like to give them a good clean and maybe even scan the film directly before framing them again but I have not idea about best practice.

Kind-of. I scan them, so there is some RAW workflow/editing involved.

IIRC more than two governmental archival institutions did publish best practices, but I'm not sure you can really implement them.

You probably really just clean them carefully and casually, then scan them as best as you can (...the fast methods are pricey, but if you have a lot to scan you might want to just drop some money instead of doing it for years.)

Only the D850 (and D780 I believe) will do the automatic conversion from negative.
But if you don't mind doing that yourself (with Negative Lab Pro for instance) or only plan on scanning slides you can use any Nikon camera.

It's made to be used with a couple of specific Nikon macro lenses but I've seen people online who have put it on Canon lenses using an adapter ring.
In the end it's just a film holder and a piece of frosted glass that screws on your lens.

If you want to use the ES-2 on crop you will need the 40mm 2.8 DX.

Cool I have a Digitaliza. Only problem is my tripod doesn't turn that way or just couldn't figure it out. I'll post it in gear thread and ask for help

BTW, I do struggle myself regardless. There are quite many workflow and gear issues with scanning large quantities of negative film (which I also didn't shoot myself for the most part; it is inherited).

You can so easily waste a lot of time, and so easily get fairly poor results when many different types of film were used in the past and developed by different entities.

On a DSLR workflow, DSLR is just a lot faster and you'll mostly be busy feeding it (removing film from negative albums / cleaning / advancing /...). Only use flatbed as fallback when rigging the film to be in focus on the DSLR is too difficult for some reason.

This should also be qualitatively better, unless you use the priciest scanners a good DSLR or MILC with macro lens just performs better.

IMO mostly on your computer if anything, but you also might need it because really batch manipulating the negative colors without RAW is quite silly.

I'd definitely try the negative slide from the Epson. If it can be used quickly, probably all is fine?

If not, you need to try and optimize that a bit, depending on the volume of negatives.

I most likely wont.

We had point and shoots and lesser cameras. We didn't get our first slr until early 90's and we only used that up until 2001 when my dad bought our first digital slr Nikon.

So most of these aren't great quality
