Even a flash with a paltry GN of 5.6 - i.e. paced at 1m you'd need f/5.6 at ISO100 for correct exposure - placed at 10cm it's 1/10 the distance hence 10^1=100x the exposure, i.e. almost 7 stops brighter. Most macro flashes, be it ringflashes or twin flashes mounted on the lens, are usually GN8 to GN10.
Extension compensation will eat up a couple stops at very high magnification, but you still get plenty of light by placing the flash very close.
