>>3666406>when going inDon't use your finest gear, a crop-sensor camera with a kit-lens is all you need, but strap it to you.
Don't take too much with you, you'll be on the run a lot and everything you have with you is in danger of getting stolen, soaked or otherwise damaged beyond repair.
Wear protective clothing that still allows you to run fast, never forget safety goggles, better also wear light body armor under a thin jacket and bring a gas mask.
Bring water, desinfection spray and band aids.
Also maybe have a bodycam running, might end up with footage of something you missed.
>when viewing from the outsideYou want a high vantage point with good visibility, a tripod and bunch of telephoto/telezoom lenses.
Roofs of high buildings such as skyscrapers or such are a good choice.
Here is one of these situations where absurd focal lengths (500+ mm APS-C/750+ mm FF) might get usefull as you can't quickly change position yet need to take pictures of protestors a mile away.
Going in gets you better images most of the time, but can be dangerous/illegal.
Viewing it from far is safer, but your perspective is pretty much fixed.
