Sense of superiority (see; autism), creative application of camera parameters (motion blur, long exposure meme), manipulating your exposure on the go.

Generally it's a bit less of a finger twister to shift your shutter speed appropriately vs doing it through EV compensation but YMMV depending on camera body.

I mainly shoot in aperture priority anyway, but there's merit to full manual of course.

How impressive that you don't use AWB that you can just fix in two seconds in Lightroom.
How impressive that you manually select and ISO value.
How impressive that you manually focus every shot.
Shooting manual isn't hard, with modern digital cameras it is incredibly easy. Manual focus is not something to be proud of either, modern cameras will highlight the focus points you have roughly hit for you, why you would forgoe the pinpoint accuracy of autofocus however is beyond me.

Most of the gearfags are kinda meh though, I don't know why I'm subscribed to so many of them. Kai W and old DRTV is entertaining but I only find his stuff useful when he does tutorials/interviews/protog cheap cam. I feel like the film shooter youtubers and smaller channels take cooler pictures than most digital gearfags (although I'm not interested in film at all).

I don't necessarily agree man, but yeah it can seem that he's a gearfag because most of his stuff is gear reviews; however I think he also propogates the fact that you can take good pictures with whatever you have.
In most of his videos of old-ish cameras, it's obvious that he's like an autistic /g/ thinkpadtard who doesn't care if the camera doesn't have a wide iso range or is like 4 Megapixel or whatever - "all modern cameras are good enough for most needs" which is the exact opposite of gearfagging.

He gave a speech to a school that was just a bunch of anecdotes about how great he was.

Film photographers are generally good for that.
They might lust after certain cameras or lenses, but I would say it never comes close to modern gearfagging.

In general, it film photographers are probably more interested in experimentation rather than lusting after gear.

I don't like Jared's processing but I think his photography's alright.
I also think he's one of the better reviewers on youtube.
I hate his personality though. after about 4 years watching his stuff, I can't figure out if he's actually an autist with too much confidence in himself or if it's all an ironic 'loser thinks he's a chad' act.
Bottom line, I wouldn't get a beer with him but I would watch his real-world review before buying a camera.

Tony and Chelsea are probably the worst in the category unless you include people like Unbox Therapy.

Best overall for me is Thomas Heaton.

I sometimes don't like the big shutter speed change while also not being fond of shutter priority, mainly at night, so manual has been easy to keep the settings under control. I've been using manual more lately over aperture priority.
