Resources for learning photography

Hello there anons,

I recently bought a camera (OLYMPUS OM-D E-M10 MARK II) because it looked nice and now I have to face a terrible problem. I never used anything other than my smartphone camera.
My question to you is - are there any good/recommended resources to guide a complete idiot through the mysteries of photography? I did google a few (pic related is from Udemy course that I'm thinking about) but I believe it's better to double check with you, as an experts :)

I learned by trial-and-error, Youtube, websites, practice. There is always something to learn, and probably things to unlearn if a source was wrong. Buy cleaning kits and learn how to properly clean lenses and sensor.

Reading articles and watching youtube videos. I recommend videos that sound like courses rather than the latest Peter McKinnon shit. Check out steeletraining and DSLRguide for starts. If you're unsure about how to expose properly, shoot it in auto, then check how the camera decides to expose it. As for books, i recommend practical guides like that of Lee Frost's. Get them online or from the library but never pay money for a practical book.

Very cool camera. Also just do these things
- learn the exposure triangle
- learn the settings of your camera by messing around and see what happens when you do X or Y
- learn a RAW editing program. Sounds hard but really most of the stuff you need to do are some basic sliders for highlights, contrast and shadows

Most normal people shoot with auto ISO on aperture priority.

Biggest takeaway from trying to learn from YouTube is don't think the style those influencers shoot is how you must shoot all the time.

Remember they shill gear and every one of their photos is about muh bokeh, pixel peeping, overly sharpened and over processed in Lightroom.

If you look at someone really renowned like Nan Goldin, it's about being authentic and capturing a moment in time, even if it's not completely prefect or in focus.

Don't fall for the "If everything single thing in a photo isn't perfect, then it's not a good photo."

Recommend watching "Wabi Sabi" video from Jamie Windsor.

You should try to divide your learning into two parts: learning general photography, and learning how to use your gear.

For general photography, other people have provided resources. To learn how to use your camera, I really recomend checking the Rob Trek youtube channel. He is a tiny youtuber that does a lot of vids focusing on the EM10 ii, providing tutoriasl on how to set up some functions of the camera and how to deal with specific tasks (e.g. macro photography, low light, etc).

Definitely just keep using the camera. Go places and get pictures. Once you know your camera settings (ISO, White Balance, Aperture, and Shutter Speed) you're halfway to being a pro.

Buy this. It has videos and easy to understand explanations. Unironically useful for a beginner even though I know a huge majority of /p/ will probably go nuts after I post this

I don't think youtube learning is all that great, but it has some merits. I google subjects I'm going to shoot before hand to get an idea of what settings work well (fireworks, beach sunsets, etc) and go at it. My photohraphy has improved pretty quickly when I travel somewhere now by reflecting on the mistakes of my past photos. Additional books I'm reading

Understanding Exposure, Fourth Edition How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera by Bryan Peterson (havent started this one yet)

At some point in my life I made the mistake of buying this book.
One positive about it though is that it gives you access to a Facebook group where you can go and laugh at other peoples shitty pictures.
