Bought the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 years ago. Took good portraits, never made any money but got laid and got to see naked chicks for boudoir and implied nudes. Some of the chicks became friends and wingmans.

Nearly none of those are shot using very wide lenses unless it's for muh low light. Realistically grand majority of lenses with say 85mm f1.2 would be bought for portrait since you can easily photograph some ducks on f2.8

Short telephoto lenses have been referred to as portrait lenses for as long as interchangeable lenses have been a thing. No one thinks they can ONLY be used for portraiture, and no one thinks ONLY a short tele can be used as a portrait lens, it's just a term people use for a short tele. It's like when people refer to "landscape orientation" or "portrait orientation". Doesn't mean they're saying you can ONLY shoot a landscape that's wider than it is tall and ONLY shoot portraits that are taller than they are wide, it's just what we call those things.

If you're trying to make some legitimate point about what can and can't be used to shoot a portrait, you're just making yourself sound like you haven't been involved in photography long enough to know and understand that that's a commonly recognized term. Stop acting like you think you can win an argument with literally the entire rest of the English-speaking photography world by yelling at three anons on 4chan.

If you legitimately had never heard the term before, well, now you know the term. Whether or not you think it's a good term for lenses in that focal length range is irrelevant, because everyone else has decided that that's what they're called, so they're called it.
