Tasma Type-25, Russian (nowadays military) 125 ISO film(pushable until 450) for making maps from satellites and planes, availble through a "SREDA Film Lab" reseller by the name of SFL T-25, very thin, thin like a human hair, they say it's special anti-dust celluloid(might be true, it has a very little amount of dust on scans)

My first attempt to develop with a professional chemistry, D-76(ID-11)

Using a DSLR or MILC to scan your negs is faster and (depending on the camera sensor) will give you more resolution than any dedicated scanner ever would. (Not including drum scanner obviously)
This is coming from a Plustek 8100 user btw

Not him, but it took me less than an hour to photograph a roll of negative and convert them in lightroom. It's way faster than sending it to a lab.

it takes me <5 minutes to print a UPS label and tape it to a box and leave it at the front desk of my building. NCPS sends back a new box that I use for the next order.

Any tips for dslr scanning? I have just started and it look fine for black and white, but I'm having issues scanning and inverting colour negatives.

I think I might be overexposing it? People say to expose to the right, which I am doing, but I was just looking at the main histogram and not individual colour channels. How do you choose the right exposure? And what should I set the colour balance to? I set it to daytime colour balance so they are consistent. When I tried manually inverting with curves I got really strange results though, like funky psychedelic colours.

Any tips?

There is some trickery here and it might differ from camera to camera. Yes, you should not be looking at a "gray" histogram. You want to prevent individual channels from clipping very much so. Pick whichever channel is highest and set your exposure for that. You are on the right track trying to balance the other channels using whitebalance but sadly that is not practical. The one camera I tried to use for camera based scanning was a Sony A6000 and at least on that camera the white balance value you set in camera does not really affect the underlying RAW image. It just gets applied as a default in your editor.

You can't trim the white balance to give you more range in your scans. This is also where the histogram starts to lie to you. This might differ from camera to camera too but that RGB histogram you see changing when you change whitebalance? That's processed info which would relate to a JPG but not really so much to the RAW file. It can show as not clipping while in reality clipping.

I always used a ~5000K light table for scanning. Maybe some other value would allow the camera to extract some more detail but I doubt it.

Okay thanks, so it must be an issue of some channels clipping then. I suspected that was the problem and it's annoying how the histogram can't be relied on completely either. I'll try again I guess.

Also I'm using an iPad as a light table and digitaliza masks. From what I've read it is a good setup, though I need to figure out a way to raise the scanning mask more as there are faint pixels in my scans.

For b&w yes.
For color, you'll spend twice as long editing to get the tones right, and even then you won't be happy with the color.

One of my favorites from my last roll of Gold 200. Basically test shots to see if my new Nikon FE meters correctly, as I had bad luck with a Nikon EM before (stuck shutter).

Anybody knows how to repair the shutter of a Nikon EM? only half of the frame seems to get exposed.

that happens on vertical running shutters when a blade has gone out of place, like when you push a finger or film leader against it accidentally.
might also happen when gunk gets on the blades and become sticky.
both cases you need to tear it down and rearrange or clean the blades.
nikon EM are $20 a body so it's not really worth it to get it service as it might be 4x that much to fix.

also, pretty nice photo. really chill vibe going on.

The set-up cuts into any time savings you have.

Making sure the lens and film and perfectly flat in relation to each other (because even a razor thin offset means you are going to get bad results) negates any time savings you have. Plus having to invert manually takes a lot of time too.

This is coming from someone who bought a dank $2k macro lens to do his.

For 35mm just get an ES-1 or ES-2. Literally takes <5min start to finish for a roll of 36exp including setup time. 2 more min batch processing in Photoshop to have color corrected files. There's no reason to take longer than 10 minutes to scan a 36exp roll of 35mm scanning with a camera.

the gs-1 is pretty good, decent lens selection and they're quite sharp, but not as sharp as Mamiya and Pentax, a lot of people have said. You'll need a viewfinder and grip if you wanna shoot portrait though. They're quite sturdy feeling, and mint ones are way cheaper than rz67s.

Kievs are incredibly unreliable to the point it's a meme. They're literally slavshit

I guess it's because the 110 sits in the middle of a few standard focal lengths so it can be a bit of a jack of all trades + it has that massive max aperture

as for the film, the superia 400 is a pretty gud all around film. ISO 200 film like fuji c200 or kodak gold 200 is also nice and cheap to have fun with during the day.

Is that where the B mode is "T" mode and you have to close the aperture or rewind for it to close back?

If so I wouldn't try it, it doesn't even fit regular shutter release cables and I'm not sure if there's any available for that one if it happens to be the one I refer to.

Alright lads, I thinking I'm going to finally buy a couple rolls of portra, but im having trouble choosing between isos. Seems 400 is the same choice and looks nice when overexposed by a stop, but then again so does 160 and 800. I really do like smoothness in my images (sorry film grain) so idk.
Also can i get some suggestions for projects to burn through my excess gold 200?

What i like about film is the convenience of my kb18. I keep it in my jacket pocket and its as easy as sliding a lens cover (which i do before i want to take photos) and i simply pull it out and shoot. Yeah i can only take 36 photos but i cant think of a single digital camera that can be deployed so quickly, especially while being as light as my kb18. Theres probably better point and shoots but this works good enough for the day time.

Are there any good film presets for lightroom out there? Ive been shooting digital and going through the VSCO presets to try and get a feel for what film to use when. The >VSCO makes me untrusting about theur accuracy though. I shoot on an old rebel if it matters.

I'm partial to slide. I'm really glad I've almost always shot my family portraits on Provia or Ektachrome. They just feel more special than if they were on negative film.

Tbh making "accurate" film presets is borderline impossible. While the dev chemicals are the same for C41, different film age, storage, and exposure give you a huge variance in results. The E6 and C41 film emulations by VSCO are about as accurate as you can expect a preset to be. Compare portra to velvia both on real stock and digitally, they arent too far off.
Black and white on the other hand, the simulations fall apart. There are too many developer options, times, and conditions to make a black and white film remotely possible to emulate. The closest you can reasonably get is to get a B&W filter preset pack and tweak contrast and exposure from there. Its not a terrible way to learn to use films, but the process is what makes film worth it for me.

That goes for every other scanner and software, there isn't a perfect holy grail that does everything in a snap and perfectly.

Even if you ask a lab for scans, there is gonna be someone behind the scanner doing the adjustments needed.

I ordered 3 packs of colorplus 200 and a 5 pack of tri-x. I'm gonna try and get some pictures in before I head up to a local state park. Any recommendations for a film scanner? The pluste 8100 seems well recommend for 35mm film but it doesn't sound like it can do medium format at all which would be nice to have in the future.

For me the $100 for NLP was totally worth it, I am very happy with how well it works and how easy it is.

for every film you shoot, make your own PS action.

using an image shot in daylight, record yourself colour correcting it by using the grey balance tool + curves. Once you dial that in, simply use that action any roll you scan of that particular film.

Works well for me I dunno. I've been doing this since before NLP was even an option and don't see a reason to suddenly buy NLP.

salutations, /p/. I've just started to shoot film this summer, and with that also begun photography in general. I've been developing and scanning with a v600. a lot of my photos seem "flat" to me (this being one of them), at least compared to what I'd expected from film. That is a good question. I'm not really sure. For example, the look I was expecting I guess is something like >>3687207's photo. I don't know the lingo used in the business, but "flat" is the best way I can describe my pic related compared to his. I'm not sure if mine is underexposed/underdeveloped, but that's what seems to be the case based on things I've found on google. To be honest, I wish I could tell you. A quick google told me that I didn't wash the film long enough it seems? Apparently that rears it's head in the form of a purple cast on the picture

The other anons picture had a lot more color and contrast. Where as yours the house, road and sky are fairly close in color. I havent noticed a difference in washing my film, I think it preserves your chemicals though. To fix it all i did was set the white, black, and grey point in the image using the levels tool

No problemo, I was where you were not to long ago and I'm still not the best at it. Your other photo was not bad at all some people like that flat aesthetic. You can do most of the editing with the curves tool. If you don't want it move the points in each color channel to just before they clip in the histogram. I've done it in the orange circles and adding more to create an "S" will add more contrast.

Silverfast is a scanning program and it has some good film color correction built in. You can get a free license with your scanner serial number on their website. I prefer using vuescan and inverting myself but if I'm feeling lazy I'll use silverfast.

Negative Lab Pro is expensive as fuck and requires that you already have Lightroom. I bought a used dedicated scanner for less than the price of Negative Lab Pro and it works wonders. You don't get away with using a DSLR, to be honest. I used one with a light table for a while but it never turns out well. Just get a dedicated scanner. Mine's a Minolta from the eary 2000's and cost me like 70 bucks, it's still MILES better than any DSLR set up.

I own a SUPER TL, I think I paid like 5 euros and like 3 in shipping. I wouldn't really pay more than that. They're solid, reliable cameras but they're not worth more than a dime unless they come with some cool Carl Zeiss Jena lens (which still isn't nearly as good as actual Carl Zeiss lenses)

Fair. Maybe expensive is the wrong term. But I'd still say your 99 dollars is better spent on a used dedicated scanner. Mine's old, but it still works better than DSLR scanning. You can obviously get good results from DSLR scanning, but it's not worth the time, effort and money in my opinion. Considering that you can get better results for cheaper and faster using dedicated scanners, I wouldn't recommend the DSLR method desu.

I can say without a doubt DSLR Scanning is MUCH faster than and gives the best quality. Seriously, you can have a whole roll scanned and edited at whatever resolution your camera is (48mp for me) in less than 10 minutes DSLR Scanning.

Just copped an Fe too! I was amazed at how sharp the lens was compared to my Pentax. The only thing I don't like about it is the exposure compensation/iso dial, I find it a little hard to adjust. If you push the timer lever towards the lens it will lock the exposure and you can double expose if you move the switch on the advance lever.

Could be worse. Your negative isn't laying completely flat - the left hand side is curling.
If you just developed the film, wait a little while longer. Ilford's Delta films generally dry super flat.

They still use those "magnifying machines" on photographic paper that is then developed in RA-4 chemicals.
But instead of projecting your negative onto the paper, they digitally project a scan of your negative into the paper.
This is done automatically in the minilab machine.

Manually making a colour print using a projector is time intensive plus there are not that many people left that are trained to do it.
Think about it like this:
If a lab charges you $10 to develop a B&W film in 20' following a braindead simple process, with chemistry that costs $0.30, how much do you think they'll charge for a colour print that takes at least 3 times as long, including test prints etc. and manual adjustment of exposure and white balance, and consumables costing roughly $2-3?

Don't expect less than $50 for an 11x14". And probably more.

If you're up for it, get an enlarger yourself.
They can be relatively cheap. Search for "dichroic enlarger" or "colour enlarger". LPL, Durst, Omega are some common and good brands.
You can get a medium format capable colour enlarger for $200 or so, less for 35mm.
With colour prints, the materials and equipment are not that expensive, if you pay someone to do it for you you're paying mostly for their time. If you have the time to spare, you can try doing it yourself, it's fun and rewarding and you'll learn a lot, especially about colour balancing.

Ensure the black and white values are correct before starting--proper white and black point etc.

Use healing brush or clone stamp to fix any damage to the image like scratches or dust.

Do research on what colour certain things would likely have been (clothing, buildings etc).

Gather reference images that have similar lighting and colours and subject matter.

Paint on a Color Layer in Photoshop. It's easiest with a tablet.

Ensure you get proper hue and saturation shifts on objects as they transition from light to shadow.

Your first few attempts will likely suck.

the solenoid controlling the flash pop-up release is most likely busted.
canon EOS camera bodies are really cheap, like $5 cheap, so you're better off getting a replacement body and reusing that lens, than looking into having it fixed.

You can get such focusing screens. People just preferred the matte ground glass. Or the manufacturers promoted the classic matte-miscroprism-split prism trifecta to capture all preferences adequately with a single screen.

Personally I find a full microprism screen distracting, like looking through a kaleidoscope. Especially inconvenient for zone focus and hyperfocal shooting.
Imo a nice, matte screen provides the most uncluttered and most comfortable viewing. You can get them in different fineness as well, so you could get a coarser grind to "snap" into focus more obviously and help you focus easier, or a finer grind for brightness *or* if you shoot hyperfocal a lot (more fine grind = DoF looks wider if you don't check carefully and have good vision).

You're completely wrong. Ground glass is in every prism on a DSLR. What is the image projected on? A ground glass WITH a fresnel lens moulded on the other side. A matte screen is colloquially known as a ground glass, even though it may not be made of actual, ground glass.
A fresnel is a type of lens often used to help with edge brightness ON a ground glass / focusing screen. They can even be the same piece of glass, but they have two completely different purposes.

TL;DR - Get fucked, Dunning-Krueger fodder

If they’re frontier process then yes, there usually developed around 38c between 2:45 to 3:15 iirc depending on the process. The time is not adjustable as it’s belt/chain driven through tanks.

Newbie question:
I was shooting some iso 200 film during a sunny day, composition had sky and a wheat field in it. I shot at f/11 and 1/500th. You guys think the shots will be exposed well? I used a metering app.

anyone remember the name of an american dude who custom makes ground glasses for 6x7 cameras? I think they were about 80 a pop, I wanted to get one for my GS-1 and apparently they're much higher quality than the original one.

Oh shit thanks dude I've been looking for a new focusing screen for my GS-1 for ages!
My current focusing screen is the generic matte one and has a huge scratch on it. Been trying to find a split prism screen since i purchased my GS-1 but no luck, that dude seems to sell them at a good price too.

Been trying to figure out a good and easy workflow for scanning slide film with a Plustek 8100 and Vuescan. I've been scanning and doing all adjustments in Vuescan, saving as a TIF then importing to Lightroom to do dust removal/sharpening.
Thoughts on the results?
I have a huge backlog of slide film to scan as I never had a good workflow, would love some tips if you guys have any.

yes, machine and chemistry maintenance.
local lab that does minilab c41 dev at $1.60 scratch the negatives and 3 in 10 rolls end up with faded colors because spent developer and full of permanent stains and blotches from dirty fixer.
other lab that does dev at $4.50 guarantees fresh and clean chemistry for each dev and their jobo thanks never damage the negs.

I got one and only use it to scan whole strips for friends to choose which frames they want scans from. The single frame scans are then done with a Plustek 8200i, as the v350 scans are too bad.

I use a smartphone app for metering, and I never had any problems. If you shoot on negative film you have a ton of latitude, for example tri-x or portra can be underexposed by a full stop or overexposed by up to around 5 stops and still produce a nice image. I usually err on the side of overexposure if I am unsure since negative film handles overexposure remarkably well and much better than underexposure. If you're shooting slide film you will need to be more careful in metering.

Keep in mind that metering with the phone will take a look at the whole scene, which can measure wrong for what you intend sometimes. What I often do (and a lot of others do) is hold my hand up close to the phone camera so my hand fills the whole frame and I take a measurement on that in the lighting I am shooting in. As long as your skin tone is not black this will work, if it is then you can just measure off some concrete or something.

But yeah you probably are fine using the phone. Film is very forgiving. I've also just randomly guessed the settings based on how much light I think there is and not bothered measuring at all and gotten nice images. Technically metering accurately will give a better image, but I think many would be hard pressed to really tell the difference and I enjoy the peace of mind of not worrying or stressing too much on nailing the exposure perfectly as the results will be fine even if you are off slightly.

Just adding that many apps offer a kind of "spot" metering, i.e. you tap on the screen where you want to meter and a small circle appears and it meters the area in the circle.

These are really great, I love the first two a lot. The third one feels really close but something is a bit off to me. Maybe crop the top and left slightly to remove that tree thing on the left edge and the other building or whatever showing slightly at the top. Maybe clone stamp out the hairs on the right border too. I think just a cleaner frame would help it.

Where were these taken btw?

The only scanner I have is a Fujitsu Scansnap ix500. Can it scan negatives? It does dual sided scans, so I think it might actually backlight.

I like TRI-X 400 and ACROS.

You dont need colors when starting to take images. Camera's are instruments that focus light. And if you want to start out, start out with just that, light. You can then progress with color filters and then to color film. This will help your exposure alot in the future.

You are still restricted to the bayer interpolation smudgey guesswork of colours and 14 bit depth. Scanners, even a shatbed, enjoy 48 bit. There is no point shooting film if you are scanning with a fucking DSLR. A CCD for monochrome would be acceptable.
