Hi!

I wanted to buy ultrawide lens for my pentax k1 mark II and currently im between 2 lenses. One is original pentax and other one is Laowa. Is it worth to sacriface full frame just to get original pentax? It's going to be 16.5 - 27 mm. What do you think guys?

1. PENTAX 11-18mm f/2.8 Star HD DA ED DC AW

2. Venus Optics Laowa D-Dreamer 12 mm f/2,8 Zero-D (mounting Pentax K)

Well i just started with photography and currently i only have Pentax HD DA 16-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR - to learn basics, take it everywhere etc.

I wanted to get lens for some mountain panorama shots as well as stars / milkyway - i thought that ultrawide is good for that

Go for the Venus, don't cripple your full frame camera. I use a Tokina 11-16mm, and when I want to shoot wide, I mostly want to shoot as wide as possible. You don't really need a range, you can always crop.

Nah, wide is good for that. Ultrawide means that all of your pics will have keystoning unless your camera is perfectly level. It means that everything in frame will appear very small and distant. It means that for successful, not-boring composition, you'll have to fall onto a few very common tropes that get tiring quickly (put the camera close to a wall! put something in the immediate foreground! take a selfie!)

Ultrawide is really fucking difficult to compose properly for landscapes. Ironically a telephoto or long zoom is better for starting landscapes because it removes a lot of the distractions and clutter, and makes composition far easier.

Totally agree. Long lenses are the way to go for landscapes and nature shots. It's a common beginner mistake to assume you need a wide lens to "get it all in". The truth is, 35mm is as wide as you need for landscapes, and longer lenses really are marvelous for creating a sense of scale.

well what do you think about this then:
Pentax SMC FA 31 mm f/1.8

My goal for the next year is to photo matterhorn. And before that i want to try to shoot milkyway as well as some nice stars.

31mm is a very good and functional focal length, especially for astro.

I think you need to binge watch some of Nigel Danson on youtube, a guy who's seriously made some big bucks doing landscapes, and yet isn't a gear whore. Actually talks about technique and composition.

I tried to look up some Pentax Full Frame lenses, and it just dawned to me how fragile this ecosystem really is.

Tamron hasn't ported any of its modern G2 lenses to K-mount.
And Sigma gave up after releasing just the 35mm F1,4 for K-mount.

Honestly you're better off with their APS-C system.
Pentax is releasing a new APS-C powerhouse soon, its OVF will be Full Frame sized and wreck anything offered by Canikon.

And most importantly the Pentax APS-C lens lineup is much more solid than the FF.

There is a Sony-Tamron-Sigma thing going on for E-mount at the moment.

When I think to to what Pentax should have done, I think they would have been more successful if they had joined into the E-mount group.
Imagine the K1-ii, but compatible with all the shiny new Tamron zoom lenses.
The 400 gram 17-28 F2,8 etc...

That timeline would have been so nice.

yeah, but Pentax does not want to produce mirrorless cameras (good for them desu), so the E-mount glass will not work.

Maybe they will join the L MOUNT ALLIANCE if they ever decide to produces a MILC.

I like the pentax stuff as an idea (weather sealing, IBIS in DSLRs, bright viewfinder etc.), but I dislike the actual cameras themselves: ugly menus, weird knobs, whatever the fuck those interchangable grips were for the KP etc.

They need to jump to a healthy mount, not a struggling mounnt.
Believe it, there are a lot of E-mount owners who would love to try out a new bulky body with proper whether sealing and giant grip.

Pentax needs to be the place where they can access Tamron and Sigma lenses.

I would honestly love a E-Mount Pentax, but I dont think it will ever happen.

That's the key right there.
Sigma is currently playing on 2 horses. E-mount for their bread and butter income + L-mount as their passion project.

Pentax could do the same.
Pentax E-mount to rake in the bread and butter income.
K-mount APS-C as their passion project.

Tamron and Sigma are not what they were in the past.
They have access to native E-mount electronics now, their mirrorless designs are native AF.
And the AF motors they use today are on an entirely different level.

These are honestly pretty easy and low tier astro photos. I like the first one because you can see the Andromeda Galaxy pretty clearly, and the second one, while exposed for just a smidge too long, shows some nice nebula and the colors of the milky way well.

I think, off the top of my head, these were roughly 15 and 30 second exposures at ISO 3200. The second one had some light painting, meaning I literally just took a flashlight and quickly passed them over some trees for 20 seconds or so to illuminate the foreground.

You'd be surprised what you can do with a tripod and a dark sky.

I have more than 20 years on experience shooting nikon, leica, minolta and pentax equipment. Sigma lenses have shitty image characteristics, I need just a few shoots to judge them. Tamron I have no interest, so I never checked them.

Literally does not matter, so long as the lens is sharp. A sharp lens is better than any other characteristic, and you can't convince any prosumer otherwise.

I shoot 50mp 5Ds and the Tamrons are sharp af across the frame wide open. That's the thing that really impressed me with both. There is no fucking sharpness fall off at all.

Bokeh and color are great and the IS on the 70-200 is eerie it's so good. I only wish the 45mm was an f/1.4 for a little more bokeh, but the bokeh quality is great.

I like the 45mm Fl on 35mm full frame and was checking the Tamron 45mm f1.8, it has shitty close to midrange bokeh for a lens they had no limits in size and weight to make. The thing its fuck-huge for a normal focal length lens.

weight, price, size, and for Sigma's case, they also tolerate higher distortion (because it is easily correctable in SW)

The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 for Pentax K is cheap (less than $300), made for full frame and iq is ok. Iq will be better than with the Pentax 11-18.
