People really need to meme that Theoria Apophasis guy too because he is a joke, he talks super condescendingly about photography and lenses but his photography is among the worst I’ve ever seen. There’s a video of him actually doing photography and the model looks extremely uncomfortable in every picture and all of the shots are 2 - 3 stops overexposed. Wish he would just stop making videos because he makes Fuji and Fuji users look bad.

Shooting raw is the only way to get color depth greater than 8-bit. 8 bit=16 million colors, 12 bit=68 billion colors.
If you want to print your work you shoot raw and print from formats other than JPEG otherwise you’re incompetent. JPEGs are only fine for digital screens because digital displays are so much more limited than high end inkjet printers.

Oh please try convincing me that 8 bit color isn’t 16 million colors and 12 bit is 68 billion? That is literally just a fact of sensor and digital encoding technology. If you shoot JPEG you are fucking yourself over if you want prints that really stand out. It’s not just that you get more colors it’s that you get much finer gradation of color, less banding, more subtleties in contrast.

You’re retarded.
There’s no such thing as lossless jpeg. JPEG is an inherently lossy 8-bit format. JPEGs can never be like a tiff because the format was designed largely for web and screens and to use less data, and is always 8 bit, TIFF can be 16 bit.

If you’re printing from a lossy JPEG file and not a lossless format you’re doing it wrong. Photo printers can display much more color gradation and accuracy than a monitor.

And to be clear I know lossless jpeg is a thing but it still limits you to 256x256x256 8 bit color data so you are losing color information inherently if you are shooting JPEG over RAW. It seems like the camera manufacturers don’t even use lossless jpeg when you shoot fine JPEG, you’re shooting a lossy format in 8 bit which throws out a lot of color data and gradation in shadows. Eventually displays will be able to display more colors than our current 8-bit limitations and you’ll regret having shot all of your photos in a limited format designed for computer limitations and not for printing and archiving. Not only that but if you are printing, you should be printing from a 12-16 bit file format, not an 8-bit one, even if you don’t think you see color banding on your JPEGs it is often there, especially in skies due to the inherent limitations of only having 256x256x256 colors, it’s something you’ll notice on close inspection on a good monitor or print.

Literally any modern pro photo printer is 12 bit. Your monitor is almost certainly 8-bit. JPEGs are 8-bit, even “lossless” JPEGs.

The difference between 8 bit and 12 bit in a print is pretty huge especially when it comes to dynamic range and shadows.

Change your tiff from 16 bit and 8 bit, print both on a photo printer. The difference is there. 4 million colors will have extreme banding in low contrast areas

Why did you link to studies of color blindness? Are you saying you’re color blind? Color blindness doesn’t mean you can’t see gradations of colors it just means your perception of color is different. Color blind people don’t see in 8 bit. The reason why HDR TVs look so drastically better than normal TVs is because they are displaying beyond 256 levels of brightness per pixel, something that is an inherent limitation of 8 bit files.
If you work for a magnum photographer who prints from JPEGs it’s because he’s a retarded boomer who doesn’t know shit and you should probably educate him rather than making a fool of yourself on an anime image board.

I think when I started here d and ac were still posting. I think I spoke with isi and some others a fair bit in the IRC. Who was the dude who just took abstract pictures of the sky and building rooftops? Posted a ton for a while.

I tried to cultivate better board content for a while by nurturing the daily photo threads and offering lots of critique. I don't think I changed much.

I'll try to answer your question myself OP. I spent a long time here a long time ago, and for a brief period it was my job to identify the memes and culture of /p/.

/p/ has had a small but persistent culture in the past. There have been some good photographers who have posted here and they have had some good discussions with each other over the years. Memes have mostly been about lampooning particular photographers or stereotypes. The style of humour was usually to not take oneself too seriously- that might in fact be the core of /p/. It was always about tearing down self-important photographers, and usually other photographers too.

/p/ was always a sort of oldfag board, left untouched by the swarms of shills and psyops visited upon the bigger ones. The diminutive size meant that a small number of posters, or even one very determined one, could leave an impact on the whole board. I'm trying to remember one poster now, who critiqued everyone ruthlessly. Might be the same guy I'm talking about in my previous post.

Anyway hopefully this rambling answers your query a little bit. /p/ is kind of lame. I kind of like it.I hope a couple more familiar faces show up in this thread.
