Nikon will die in the next couple of years.
They have had massive loses recently, and the company literally only makes cameras, they dont have a fat and luicrative medical division like Olympus, or a major conglomerate like Basedny or Panasonic.
This camera looks like a desperate try to stay in business. It brings nothing new to the table, and its priced so high that it wont steal any marketshare from the competitors.

Why Z50 over Z5?

I prefer the Z50 for the lower cost, flippy screen, full width 4K and lower weight. Also you can use the 50 1.8 as portrait lens which is cheaper than the 85 1.8.

But the Z5 has IBIS, AF joystick and is FF (nicer bokeh). The kit lens is shite though

Small zoom range and small aperture probably meant smaller lens overal -> more likely to take it with you.
24mm and 50mm corresponds to the standard and tele lenses on many phones -> comfy familiar angles

Nikon had a 24-50 back in the AF-D days too, but it's a bit of an oddity.

It was just a rumor from what I've read but I don't really understand what is happening, something got sold but cameras are still being made like normal. Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV comes out in September.

We still dont know the details, as the deal is still being negotiated. However, we know that Olympus (the company) sold the division that makes cameras. The buyer, JIP, will most likely continue to manufacture and sell at least some Olympus products, but we dont know wich ones, and if there will be any changes to quality. Also, they will probably not use the brand Olympus anymore.

I bought a $600 camera 3 years ago. The only thing I've found that's an actual problem is that I have to open up the menu and activate the timer after every shot if I want to use the timer. That's a pretty narrow use case, though. Point is, consoomers will consoom because that's what they do, not because it's better.

There are a lot of reasons to shoot FF and having the sharpest and best lenses ever is not always one of them. Years ago this kind of money would get you a D7000 with maybe one lens. I remember when the D600 came out for $1500 or so and how talked about it was for being so affordable. This camera is far more capable than that one.
