why would one buy an f/4 lens that isn't telephoto? is it just because they're cheap?

op here, neither of them were cheap, and honestly I don't think I've had the value from them.

and sorry for being a whining cunt, I know that's not constructive. I had some food and a walk in the rain. I even took my Olympus tough p&s but didn't end up using it. thank you for listening /p/. I will try taking some photos again.

I had aspirations in 2010 but didn't know what for. I enjoyed the ritual of taking the photos but ended up with mediocre to bullshit stuff. then depression fucked me. and now, well, I'm kinda mad at myself for letting it gather dust but at least I didn't sell it to the first bidder or throw it all away.

I bought new. the 24-105 f/4 L was about £500 from memory, and the 17-40 f/4 L wasn't much different price wise.

I'm in a same boat, op. I keep buying gear, that i barely took out simply because i don't have any energy to go somewhere. Or just buy some expensive stuff for my parents.
I slowly lost every hobby i used to have and while selling everything is only logical, i'm afraid to do so. It would mean i have nothing beside my IT job. And ability to scroll mongolian basket weaving forum from time to time.
It won't help you, of course. And we both know better than "it will become better" and "just bee happi" bullshit. I typed all this shit to say - you not alone.

If anything, it is more useful for telephoto lenses. Telephoto lenses require a higher shutter speed, so any positive change to get lower iso is welcome.
If you shoot with a wide angle, ex. 17mm, you only need ~1/20th to get a sharp handheld picture, that means in the same conditions, you need a shutterspeed 10x lower (a bit over 3 stops) than a 200mm. Losing 1 stop of light because of f4 instead of f2.8 is not as big of a deal.
Add to this the fact that at 17mm, even at f2.8, it is very hard to get any depth of field going on. Everything will be in focus anyways, thus you don't care for a big aperture for depth of field options.

As for the 24-105, you get for approximately the same weight and size as the 24-70 f2.8, an extra 35mm on the long end. For most people that is far more useful, since most of your pictures probably arent (and shouldnt) be at f2.8. If you are just going to take a single lens, I think the wider range is more useful than 2.8 any day of the week.
If you know how to compose well, and guide your backgrounds well, you don't need to use background separation with depth of field nearly as much. There are of course exceptions.

As someone who owns both the 24-105/4L and the 24-70/2.8L, the 24-70 is noticeably bigger and heavier and I almost always shoot at f/4. So the 24-70 spends a lot more time collecting dust except for that once-in-a-blue-moon event where I really need f/2.8 and zoom but not long enough zoom to pull out the 70-200.

Wrong. Telephoto means that its infinity is closer than its focal lenght. Its a specific lens group, not a catch all for zooms. Plenty of fixed telephotos.

sad story. lenses hold value really well though. i like to buy used and resell via ebay when i get bored. its fun and you can try a lot of gear. the bodies go down in value but that one is pretty good, so maybe id keep the body and one lens and then go shoot communists
