"Just for fun" point and shoot / compact cameras?

I've been looking for a decent p&s camera that i can bring around with me so I can get more photography in my day to day life. Obviously I'm better off putting a little bit of cash in and getting something like a ricoh gr or fuji, but has anyone tried the canon powershot? They're cheap as hell and if they aren't THAT bad I can settle for less quality. I'd rather put the difference towards a lens for my proper camera.

I often don't bring my dslr with me because it is inconvenient, and my phone camera is worse than even the cheapest p&s

we busted out that exact camera the other day to shoot the comet
wide fucking open and forcing ourselves through the shitty menu to find the "LONG EXPOSURE" settings, hooooly shit, lol, fucking 15 second max
1600 iso max
and no raw whatsoever, so we had to wait ANOTHER fifteen seconds for every exposure to convert to jpeg on some tiny fucking starved-for-resources michaelprocessor

Chdk is great, not quite on the level of Magic Lantern for the DSLRs but still damn good. As for OP's question, you already have a 'proper' camera but are you ready for the complete lack of control on some of the lower end P&Ss?

I have a 170 IS and it's bad for most situations. You can get some clean detailed shots during golden hour or using long exposure on a tripod, but the lens distortion near the edges is noticeable and images generally have a smudgy noise to them in moderate light. The zoom is nice though. I'm too poor for a smartphone so I'll still sometimes use it over my cheapo flip phone. I think a PowerShot would leave you disappointed and you should just put that money towards a lens, or other fun things like LED displays, flashes, backpacks, etc. You would at least want something like a 360 HS if you're really wanting a pocket PowerShot. I was looking at their website and never knew they made the Ivy line of cameras. The CLIQ+ looks neat. If you're going for just for fun, an instant print camera can let you share the moment with others in a fun way. This thing is only $90 too.
