>>3706908Tip number two, when you have a subject whos body is long (like a dog, cat, human) shooting them such that the direction of the lens is paralell with the orientation of the long side of their body, the photo becomes pretty disinteresting because you only see that small part of their body. Generally you want to see more of your subject not less.
In this case with the dog, try shooting him sitting, or try shooting him from a more sideways angle. Dogs will often stay sitting still if you have a ball in your hand, which you can use to make the dog look in the direction you want. Using a ball in combination with training your dog to "stay" really helps take portrait style pics.
Attached is a pic of my old roomies dog i shot the other day. See how im low, but not on the ground, and the dog is at an angle? Try recreating that photo if you can catch the light an hour or two before sunset. Dogs are amazing for practicing all types of photography.
