Selling Fine Art Prints

No.3706910 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Okay, hear me out.

I am a wildlife photographer living in Arizona and have been shooting wild life on a 40+ year old lens that I got for $800 when I was in college (300mm 2.8). I have been getting some incredible results but due to its limitations the lens has costed me numerous photo opportunities and I have long since wanted to own a modern AF lens but the cheapest one I can find that fits the bill is ~$2000. Recently the lens mount completely fell apart ( I have been repairing it regularly since I started using it) so I have not be able to shoot in months. I have since found someone willing to invest in a print to the tune of $1200 for %25 of the profit + principle and want to throw a couple hundred more in myself because I know it will cost more than that to do it the way I want. I will be getting this done at a nationally acclaimed print shop that specializes in platinum processes. I plan on taking the print to Santa Fe and selling it at one of the art markets there ( this is something a friend of mine has been doing for years, so I am going to follow his lead). I have already received critiques on this image by well established fine art photographers in my area and have been assured of its worthiness, no I am not posting it here. I am going to ask $5000 and take the first offer over $3500. $5000-($1200+(25% profit))=new lens.

Anyways, what do you think? Is this a dumpster fire of an idea?

P.S.

I am broke, unemployed and tired of not doing the one thing that I can do competently and at a professional level of quality. I know my best work is yet to come, If I end up selling cars or working at a call center for the next 20 years I will regret my entire life.

BTW the photo is of a Bighorn Sheep and it is so sharp you can see the reflection of the Grand Canyon in its eyeball. I got so close I was able to shoot it with a 40mm lens, I was about 3ft away at one point. I am really good at getting close to animals, large animals.
