50mm f/0.95, someone is offering this to me for $700, about $500, about $180 off brand new.

My fastest 50mm lens is only a nifty fifty f/1.8 ._.

He probably don't know how to mf it. It's worth a buy. If nothing else, you could sell it for same money ten years from now. Fully mechanical lenses keep their value better than the most expensive af lenses.

Funny thing is, the EOS R cameras has probably the best manual focusing aides around. The focus peaking and point guide works so well together. It's incredible.

I personally wouldn't say it's a meme if all you want is portraits with extreme background separation, medium format-like even. The lens is however, as far as I know, very soft in the corners and doesn't improve as much as one would expect when stopped down. I'd personally take it as I'm a bokeh addict but you do you.

I've plenty of these just to fool around. And all of them are better made than my more expensive af lenses. Zyongyi, Kamlan, Meike, Laowa. Zyongjiy and Laowa are becoming a bit pricey for their optical quality, but Kamlan and Mike are still terrific value for money.

It's for people that like bokeh. I don't like bokeh myself. I prefer a 50mm f/1.8 or f/2 because it's a smaller and lighter lens.

OP here, I'm also planning to get an EF 50mm f/1.2L USM in the next week or, since they're getting pretty affordable now. I think I'll get this Mitakon just to play around with after getting the f/1.2L. Who knows, it might actually pay for itself off.

consider photolithography, those are already 60+ element primes 15 years ago. kit zooms these days are absolutely fantastic, whereas "vintage zooms" were hot steaming garbage.

This is why I said primes. Computer designed zooms have probably been outside the scope of humans for a long time, but primes?
Do you think you could spot a 2020 prime vs a 1980 prime? Maybe if you did a lightbulb test, but I think most people would struggle even with test cards.

I can see it. It never bothered me too much in photography since I consider it an inherent characteristic of camera optics, but I don't like it in video either. Like you pointed out, it's apparent because he shoots wide and it would clear up if he stopped down a little more.
