The reason is "a shallow understanding of photography"
People who know nothing about photography (most people) find it accesible because its easy to imagine there's a story behind it, its easy to make a photo like that seem deep. Same with photos of old people, homeless and malnourished people... "There HAS to be a profound story there" even if the photo doesn't show it and is just an overaesthetization of a situation.
Its the illusion of depth tailored to shallow minds. It's that or just plain morbid curiosity.
