Basically: Flange focal distance, which is the distance between the camera mount and the sensor. A short focal flange distance means that the back of the lens (blue oval in this shitty ass diagram i made) is very close to the sensor. Sony cameras have a very short flange focal distance, which means that light hits the sensor at a pretty extreme angle on the edges. Cameras with longer focal flange distances have light hitting the sensor at a gentler angle and thus with better optical quality at the edges of the frame. That extended distance comes at the expense of compatibility with other lens systems and at the expense of size.

maybe what is going on is the extension tube is poorly made and mounts the lens off-axis, causing its focal plane to be misaligned with the sensor plane.

Wrong. The filter on the Sony sensor is too thick. It makes rangefinder lenses work poorly.

But this is most likely an issue too, the sensor cover glass in later Sony models is actually much better.

It’s easier the sensor stack thickness, Leicas have a thin stack and usually are shit with lenses designed for most digital cameras that perform well and vice versa.

Leicas Lens design was made for Film. With film light rays can hit the sensor at a sharp angle. With digital these sharp angle light rays will hit the side walls of the pixel bin. Leica solves that by having extra thin filter glass on the sensor + extra high microlenses on each pixel and microlens shift as the angle becomes steeper the farther away the pixels are from the center. Those are also the reasons why you can't just adapt a Leica Lens to a Sony and think you are clever and saved some money. Also Leica Doesn't have a moire filter. All those reasons lead to the hyper realistic "Leica look"

to add, wider angle Leica lenses will have bigger problems with adaption to non Leica Cameras. E.g. the 90mm should be fine on a Sony, 50mm is ok.

thats not the only thing that is different, microlens design also plays a big role. No matter how thin you will make the glass on a sony. A 24mm Summilux will never look good on a Sony compared to a Leica M10. Lack of Moire filter also helps with sharpness.
