Hidden opportunity cost here was the potential to use EF-M mount lenses on the FF MILCS bodies. I guess they didn't have the foresight to make the EF-M diameter and flange distance FF capable.

Except that its not true.... One of the reasons lenses are getting bigger and bigger is the short flange distance on Sony cameras. To cover the sensor the design of the lenses has to be altered dramatically which icreases devellopment cost and size of the lenses(talking about third party lenses). Sigmas Ceo even ranted about it when Sony started to become more popular. You can google that. If you compare third party Sony lenses to Canon/Nikon/Pentax/Olympus/...and all other manufacturers. Sony lenses(third party) are always 30% larger. When Canon introduced the RF mount they explained why they decided to make their mount larger and chose a longer flange distance on their mirrorless.(you can find the powerpoints of that presentation online with technical explanation an shematics) Basically by sticking with a slightly longer flange distance, you reduce development cost and don't need to bend light rays to fill up the surface of the sensor. One other consideration was the use of Ibis in future cameras. If the mount is bigger there is way mor space for the sensor to move aroung. And finally a bigger mount allows you to mount bigger lenses. Which makes the whole system more sturdy. It would'nt surprise me if Sony ditched the E mount in the future because they hit a wall. All other manufacturers are going for a slightly longer flange distance and bigger mounts. You may be right though... Maybe Nikon, Sony, Leica, Pentax etc... don't know shit about optics. And Sony is the only one who got it right but i kinda doubt that. And just to prove my point just read that article..

While EF-M might be the most sold body/system, I'd wager that the market for EF-M *lenses* is the smallest. It's rare for entry-level camera buyers to buy *any* lenses beyond the kit, even rarer for them to buy anything beyond the kit plus a telephoto zoom, and the sorts of people who are buying things like a nifty-fifty equivalent are also the sorts of people who will probably want to eventually go FF.

Also: You can mount EF-S and EF lenses on an EF-M body with an adapter, so a lot more focal lengths are covered for those rare people who buy an EF-M body but want more than the EF-M system has to offer natively.

The smallest and lightest normal pro zoom is on Sony, the smallest and lightest ultra wide and wide angle pro zooms are on Sony. And existing dslr lens designs work just fine on Sony. The majority of people buying M are people who would have bought a P&S before the rise of the cell phone. They're happy with a decent consumer zoom.

The M is also popular with pros looking for something small, but they have EF and/or RF kits and the M is their secondary camera. They might only get something like the 22 f/2 or 32 f/1.4 and that's it.

Having said that, I think the M would be even more popular if Canon would release a set of affordable, high IQ primes like the 22 f/2. And I don't think it would really cut into FF sales. For anyone who is a potential FF customer, the M is their 2nd carry everywhere camera.

FF is 1 stop better at high ISO. But at low ISO if the sensor MP is the same then actual resolution (extinction lpmm) is going to be damn close with a slight sharpness (MTF) advantage to FF over aps-c.

IMHO the real gains are when you use the same pixel density on the larger sensor. So on FF that means 42-60mp sensors, and on MF 80-150 MP sensors. That's when the larger sensors leave the smaller ones in the dust even at base ISO.

I was considering another crop to replace my old 600D and as a possible backup for my FF setup. It would effectively turn my 50 and 85 primes into 85 and 135. I'm not interested in the EF-M lenses though.
