If you must buy a lens get a 35mm on aps-c and start there. Otherwise keep using your current lens and explain why it sucks.

Because I'm not a professional immediately so it's bad. No but to give a real answer the zoom leaves a lot to be desired for the bulk. It's okay when it's not maxed out

Examples please. Are you shooting raw or jpg? If jpg stop, shoot raw and post process. Your lens may not suck at all.

lens is probably fine optically, just keep shooting, though you will probably want a bigger tele at some point depending on what you like to shoot.

You shot this at that lenses maximum aperture(my guess not the sharpest lens ever). Retake that shot at 1/250 at f8 in direct sunlight. Come back post result. The thread should still be up. I bet that lens ain’t half bad actually.

Use the D7200 lens calibration option and learn how to use a fucking camera. The 18-140 is a good lens with the same issues any zoom like that has.

Or just spend +1000 bucks on a 20mm, 35mm and 70-200 that you won't take anywhere and consagrate to the nophoto gearfaggotry path you have already chosen.

aight it's cloudy today but I'll try the lens calibration and seeing what the autofocus is doing and shoot some stuff in a couple of hours when I'm done work. I'm sort of glad you guys are essentially calling me a faggot so I can delay spending more money

Getting close to birds requires patience, and some basic knowledge of their behaviors and biology, a big tele lens also really helps.
1/640 should be enough for handheld, especially if you're using a lens with VR.

Alright bros I got a tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 lens to take pictures of birds and bugs off ebay for $80. It was in the ending soon section when I was drunk last night with a good seller hopefully its not shit.

Would I be better off with 35 or 50mm to round out my bag? I'm going to continue to try and get shit for less than $100 if I don't get burned on this purchase

You are on a crop so 35mm

Ah, the infamous Purple Monster. Don't shoot anything in direct sunlight and below f/8 or f/11.
There is a good reason why it was so cheap.
Try and look for a Sigma 400/5.6 APO AF with screwdrive AF (not the MF kind there is plenty of those) from the 90's film era. It has a decent image, focuses on the D7200 and is cheap.

1/640 is fine. 1/500 will freeze most moving things well. Hummingbird wings and propellers might have some blur still. Looks like focused missed a little. Longer telephoto helps with birds a lot, but not as much as learning to get real close

These could be better. This pic is from maybe 130ft away from the dog. Seems like the lawnmower came out better than him but I didn't really try to center the focus square too great I'll have more later

Yes, you would want to use a fast enough shutter speed to keep any hand shake from blurring the image. You could get away with 1/400 ~f/8 at 100ISO. Shaky hands shouldn't impact your focus accuracy.

I’ve never owned one myself but the price seems right. Better than the 3k and 5k bullshit gimped bodies. I briefly had a 3200, wasn’t my favorite to use but the photos weren’t bad.
