1) Select a good lens, tripod, and camera.
2) Go into the field, open live view, open up to the widest aperture, crank the iso, zoom into the live view as far as possible with a star slightly off center, and then focus so the bright star is as small as possible (manual focus, d'uh).
Then calculate the exposure you need (trial and error or using the 200 rule, or the npf calculator).
From there, just make sure you're reframing enough and using your intervalometer, either builtin or otherwise.
