is it worth it to get a canon ef 50mm f/1.8 mk i repaired
it has some mold issues, nothing super noticeable
or should i just get a new mark ii?

f1.4 & f1.2 are meme I'd say. If you want a brighter 50mm, get the Sigma f1.4 ART

Absolutely clear.
The STM model 50mm costs ~80€ at most used
I don't think you'll find many shops that'll even take a look at a lens for less than 30€.

Unless the repair is something you want to try & /diy/

1.2 is almost a full extra stop of light. The DoF will be tiny but it can be the difference between a blurry and a clear shot in low light. You’ll pay the price but it’s all about how important that is to you.

The extra glass elements in those lenses somewhat diminish the T stop.

It's a T1.5 lens, the f1.8 lenses sit at T1.9.

The f1.4 Sigma on the other hand is a T1.7 lens with the Canon f1.4 sitting at T1.6.

Of all these lenses in terms of light transmission, I'd say the Canon f1.2 makes the *least* sense in terms of what you're actually getting.

The 1.4 has a nice look to it, you lose the swirly bokeh of the 1.8 but it renders colour nicely and it gives these nice and soft green abberrations in high contrast areas.

The focus ring isnt very smooth though because its an early USM lens and they apparently break easily.

Pic related is my favourite photo ive taken with this lens on a 600D

I have two 50mm 1.8 IIs. I got them because I don't like the focus by wire on the 50mm stm. But these can break easily if you turn the focus ring while it is in af mode. That's why I have two of them. Two cost about the same as one 50mm stm. I like them.

OP, if you get contact lens cleaner you can use that to clean mold, or even isopropilic alcohol.

i have a 50mm 1.8 canon mk2 lens but i really wasnt happy about the sharpness of it at all. I 'downgraded' to a manual m42 mount 50mm by meyer optiks and im much more satisfied with the the quality. I couldnt really recommend it

50mm F1.4 is a good holiday lens I find. With a well-known durability issue if the front gets a knock. The USM mechanism in it is a budget-type based on a discrete motor rather than a ring type. I bought it over the F1.8 stm because the camera shop didn't have the stm on the day I had money.

I do not regret spending three times as much on it.

The 50mm Mkii is hideously plastic and sounds awful. Images it produces are fine but it's extremely obtrusive in use.

Nope, just sell it off to a sucker. I own all of the nifty fifties and the latest STM version which you can get for less than $100 is a peach. I use it for paid work.

upon further reflection i'm going to keep my moldy lens the way it is for now
it still takes nice pictures and instead i'm going to put my money towards a completely different lens
im thinking an 85mm 1.4 prime but i'm still shopping around

look up a disassembly guide, you could probably clean the fungus off yourself. usually takes an hour or two

I did the same to a couple of old rokkor lenses fairly easily (these are from the 60s and 70s though), IIRC the MK1 had quite a few metal components so it's meant to go back together easier (plastics really make things difficult i've found)

Definitely not. As others have said, get the latest STM model. Much, much better build quality than the Mark II.

I've owned the all three of Canon's 50/1.8s and the STM is my favorite. I've also owned the f/1.4 and when I managed to break that one, I just replaced it with the STM and haven't missed the extra fraction of a stop at all. The STM works better and is smaller and lighter than the 1.4, and it's faster and quieter than either of the non-STM 1.8s.
