I got partly into photography due to being interested in fashion more than 10 years ago. Back then the bokeh meme didn't kicked in yet.

I didn't even post that photo, nor do I give a shit about it, but it's not oof. It looks overall soft, but stuff in front of and behind the subject are in focus.

What's wrong with having the parts of the image that aren't the subject out of focus? Perhaps you're mixing up bokeh with toneh. Pic on the left is tasteful and makes the subject stand out. The bokeh is understated and does its job without letting you know. The pic on the right is obnoxious and actually distracts you from the subject. This is “toneh”.

Learn to use masks well. Learn to remove blemishes and make skin softer but without that ridiculous airbrushing overkill look. Fortunately clone stamp, heal, and content aware fill is really good these days
