hey /p/
I started my apprenticeship at a photography store 2 weeks ago and I plan on using my wage to upgrade from my 200D. I pretty much narrowed it down to an affordable full format - the 6D II. My boss told me I should go mirrorless tho, so that's where the RP comes in. I'm 99% certain I'm gonna get the 6D II tho. What are your thoughts? Any other Canon full format I should take into thought? I don't really wanna spend more than 2k on the body alone. I also want a moveable display.

Get the A7iii if you're doing recreational or non-professional work. The video capabilities of the 6Dii are lackluster and it's nothing more than a repackaged 5diii with dpaf. The biggest deciding component would be if you need the eye af offered by sony or smooth dual pixel af with canon. Video work throws ergonomics out of the window unless you're shooting action or spontaneous events, so ignore those who complain about sony's form factor

we literally only have mirrorless in store, that's why I can't really try the 6D II. I did put my hands on the RP tho and I gotta say I didn't liek it. I hate the RF shit aswell, I don't know why tho

Fool frame for the sake of full frame is rarely a good reason to upgrade; rather look for features that actually make a difference like a properly rugged body, fancy AF modes and generally better performance. Note that all these are things that the 6D nor RP provide as they're the budget FF entries.

Between the two, RP, maybe

And even that only and exclusively because of the RF glass ecosystem.

If you're sticking with EF glass then the 6D makes absolutely 0 sense over investing into better glass for your 200D and buying a 5D later.

If you're not a newbie and are interested in customization, the A7III can be a solid camera! Still, as an enthusiast, you are putting me in a conflict. I find it hard to justify still buying a DSLR, on the other hand I wouldn't like it if I didn't have a DSLR that's a complete alternative minus mirrorless features.

The 6D2 is a good compromise in this respect, as it is a DSLR that is comfortable to work with from the swivel screen.
The RP scares me off! Small batteries, missing first mechanical curtain, limited silent shutter. If you want to go mirrorless, bite the bullet and go with something greater, regardless of the brand.

Ok I think there might have been a few misunderstandings and I want to get rid of them.
1. I will NOT leave Canon. I will stick with them, because I already have a few lenses and am used to the system.
2. I don't want to use the 6D2 as a side, I want it as my main.
3. Yes, there are better cameras blah blah but I'm looking for something affordable.
4. I'm mainly going to shoot portraits and animals, maybe a bit macro.

I've meant future side after it was your main. Only few will be interested in buying this thing in a few years because most people will rather invest in the new thing, i.e. mirrorless cameras.

That depends on what you shoot, portraits? Yes, I love an 85 1.8. Adapting old vintage lens and getting all of how they look is great too.

Landscapes? Yeah maybe but coming from 24mp and going to 24mp I wouldnt want to do that Id want to upgrade to a higher res body. The best choice is mirrorless for the UWA range though.
If you want good AF in FF, then youre looking at the A7iii, the R5, and the R6. A7iii is outdated AF though, real time tracking is being put in the A7c but you might hate the body style. A7rIV has it too.

Also your boss may be biased since they only sell mirrorless but he is right. Dont buy into FF dSLR unless youre getting some good gear for cheap, then its worth it.

Jesus fuck the RP. My camera is rated for 380 and came with 2 batteries, and I often needed 2 for the day. And I always thought it had good battery life.

I would go 6D plus high end canon L series glass if you want to use auto focus. if you want to have heaps of shitty old manual glass to play around with (i do enjoy that personally) and use the mirrorless with focus peaking, then go RP. no point going RP if you arent going to use that benefit or video.

At High-ISO I have no experience with the 200D sensor. If High-ISO looks like shit, the tip should always be exposed longer (if only a little bit possible).

I bet your exposure times are way too short and you can held hand a bit longer to then be happy with higher ISO too.

You could buy a speedlight and a tripod for your 200d if you don't like the high iso performance. That will bring a bigger improvement in low light than a full frame camera.

I don't know the full frame Canon, but with the M5 the battery always annoys me. I'm very strict about switching the mirrorless cameras on and off. I manually select the viewfinder, which with newer cameras really turns off when the eye is not on the camera. Now with the Sony a7III I was really surprised how long it lasts.

This. OP seems too obsessed with pixel peeping. I used to shoot at ISO 3200 on a Nikon D3100. That was 10 years ago. Yeah it wasn't as clean but still perfectly acceptable in my opinion in the right conditions. Just get the shot and stop looking for noise at 200% zoom.

My mistake, I thought the 200D was the 18mp sensor. For the 24mp sensor it's roughly 1ev at high ISO, but images will also be sharper ooc so less sharpening or more room for NR. It makes a difference.

You have exp or processing issues if you can't go any higher on the 24mp crop sensor. Might want to address that first before spending money on FF.

Canon EF has UWA covered.

EF to RF is seamless so there's no reason to avoid a DSLR in the Canon system. If you're not shooting video mirrorless honestly doesn't bring that much to the table and it's out of OP's budget all around unless he's going to stick with crop.
