Hive mind/herd mentality is definitely a contributing factor here, the pressure on photographers to get "better" by appealing to the masses affects their creative output, like it or not. I would say find people who's work your like, not groups, but people, groups are too inconsistent. But even then, you're not going to find a photographer who is perfect and never takes a "bad" photo, so maybe just look for individual images or series you are drawn to.
