Looking to get into photography, want something I can easily carry around

Ideally can fit in a jacket pocket, but not entirely necessary.
Price isn’t a huge concern, i do want to dedicate myself, and learn, but under $1100 is where my mind is estimating.
I hear speak of Sony a6000/6100/6400 or Canon m50.

YouTube is full of shills and I don’t know what to trust there. Reddit feels the same way, minus people sharing their pics for reference on their recommendations.

that is a nice snapshit.

the cameras you listed are all great and the differences in image quality are in the noise level in terms of affecting your artistic capabilities as a beginner. if you are willing to shoot in full manual you are in an even better situation since there are so many lenses.

decide what lens you want before deciding on a system, then go on instagram and look up the hashtag associated with it, or go look at its flickr group and see if you like pictures out of that lens. an example build in the fujifilm world (what i am familiar with, many will h8) is an xe3 plus a pancake lens, like the 18mm f2 (27mm equiv) or 27mm 2.8 (40mm equiv).

after looking them up canon's mirrorless system also looks great. for your budget you could get, like, an eos m6, use the screen like a waist level viewfinder

i would recommend to not even CONSIDER buying new gear. it is a waste of money and once gear is on the used market it will hold its value well unless it is shit (which u can do your homework to avoid) or in seriously poor condition. if people start talking about mystical qualities like a lenses "character", "that leica feeling", "fujifilm colors" that is an obvious cue to ignore everything they say completely. also disregard reviews if you judge their pictures to be shit.

these gauges invalidate 99% of the poo ass bullshit spewed on websites like 35mmc fredmiranda youtube rangefinderforum etc.

for buying things you can find good deals on ebay (filter by "completed listings" to get a gauge for true market value, often things are listed ridiculously expensive to prey on the ignorant) and fredmiranda buy/sell have good deals

A6400, costs more but it has the most modern AF system, which is a lot better for continuous AF tracking. Stay away from Fuji, AF is nowhere near as good. MFT isn’t realistically cheaper or lighter than APSC, and worse performance. Unless you can get it real cheap. A6600 if you want in body stabilisation (again costs more).

Yeah I’d especially ignore the Fuji shills for this unless it’s a second hand X100F which appears to be better than most of the rest of the line.

I’m guess you’d like fast AF that locks on as quick as possible and keeps the subject constantly in focus where possible. Hence the A6400 (not the A6500 either).

Only Canon has caught up with AF, but not in their APSC range, future of EOS-M is doubtful. Nikon is yet to catch up but probably just a matter of time, their APSC line is more promising. EOS M does have a small 22mm pancake high may he good for street.

do you realize how absurdly high 25600 iso is? what good amateur photography picture have you seen that is shot at 25600 iso??? 25600 iso is an excellent capability there are use cases, but it is also an absolute corner case that wasn't even possible 5 or 10 years ago. ur x100f being 1/3 a stop worse at that ISO than an x100v is irrelevant virtually any time you are actually taking pictures, it is not an omnipresent incapacitating limitation

swaths of people are envious of "film look" and film photographers are constrained to like 800 or 1600 ISO tops, and they dont get to spin a knob to change their iso

for street It's definitely fuji x100F. but since you want to shoot night you might want to go with a full frame but I'm not super familiar with small full frame cameras.

They didn't have much. Even before corona, my area is notorious for not having a wide selection of anything, anywhere. I had to rely on the method of looking at people who used the models mentioned here >>3731436, in their portfolios and instagrams, etc. Couple nights of staying up until 3am to make sure.

I don't want to miss potentially good shots, so AF would help a lot. I'm stuck between the 6100 and the 6400, weighing out the cost and features. I'll probs pull the trigger tonight or tomorrow. Thanks anons for all the help!

For me each camera has a different experience it can offer. I pretty much enjoy shooting all camera brands. Recently tried the a6000 of a friend and now I borrowed an xa2 which is pretty fun as well to use even though it feels plasticky but has two command dials which is great for an entry level. I use Nikon and Olympus and pretty much only reason is because a friend sold me them used for cheap.

Why not buy used OP? Your first camera will not be your only camera. If you don't like it then sell it. Pic is nice OP.

As DSLR spend more on lens than body, buy a used body online. Beware of buying lens that you can mount on other cameras (for example EF mount for Canon works both with APS-C and FF)

If you’re talking really pocket size, Sony RX100 and Lumix TZ110 will fit in any pocket, and have all manual features. Both take seriously great pics.
I never even looked at them until a mate bought one and made me use it for the day. Seriously surprised, genuinely awesome.

Sure on the long run digital is cheaper but film is cooler. If you really think about it it's really 90% gearfagging and 10% actually go out and shoot. Having a cool DSLR+lens won't make you a better photographer so it's better to start from the basics of photography with film imo.

you get insta feedback on your photos.
sure I love film, but when you're starting out being able to review instantly the shots you take is invaluable to progress quickly.

I've made a choice, anons. I'll probably get shit for it, but it was a deal. Sony a6400 off ebay for 700.
I got it because reviews talked about the weather sealing, and that's kind of important with the upcoming seasons. It gets wet as fuck around here. A few people here mentioned af, and it seems portable enough. I did like the features displayed, and I have a budget to get a lens, so I'll look into some good pancake lenses. It'll be here tomorrow.
