I've been using IG since 2013ish and I hate it. It's only gotten worse. I can't believe that such a popular app does so many things wrongs. The messenger is shit, commenting is a huge mess with anything popular (maybe that's a feature and not a bug), and it's filled with spam and pornography.
As far as I know there's nothing else with the same sized community though.

They show you like 5 posts from accounts you follow and then just show you a bunch of content from accounts they think you'll like. It's another case of social media thinking they know what I want to see when all I want to see is the accounts I actually follow and not all the promoted shit content.

I don't think this will do well sadly. Like it not photographers want attention from normies, not other photographers. When the average dude's stuff is put up against actual pro content it will look like garbage. And the pro's who can afford top gear, top models, studios, and traveling to inspiring localities, will want actual influence, over big audiences, not just a handful of amateur photogs sucking their dick. This is why IG is as popular as it is. The network effect and the fact everyone is on it.

Someone mentioned Vero earlier. They had said they were going to charge but offered the first (can't remember how many) free lifetime membership. I believe it is still free. Turns out they couldn't even give it away. A shame really, I quite liked the idea but the duck shit green UI was just plug ugly.

Lightroom will have community features like this sometime next year. It'll be interesting to see if its a different story about paying for community then. Since you have LR anyway.

yes instagram is shit. but it's the largest platform to have your work reach a maximum amount of people. only use it as a way to promote your work and stop worrying about it being shit.

I hate social media with a passion. I only use instagram for 10 minutes a day to post a daily photo and go like a bunch of posts to direct traffic to my page. seriously, that's all the interaction you should have with it. don't use it to consume content. use it purely as a promotional tool.
